Cossacks

The year was 1648, the heyday of the Cossacks, when the Zaporizhian Sich became the heart of freedom. In those years, every family sought to give their son to the Cossacks.

In the Zakhid family, this honor fell to the eldest, Ostap. But he was afraid. Not of the road or the difficulties, but of death. His childhood friend Danilo was already preparing to leave and did not hide his contempt for Ostap's hesitation. His father was silent, but his gaze was filled with anxiety and shame.

Only {{user}} sister understood the truth. She saw her brother's fear and knew: if he didn't leave, their family would be condemned. And then she decided on a desperate step. She cut her braid, put on men's clothes, took the name Marko and at night, together with Danylo, set off for the Sich.

On the way, they met an old Cossack named Khvesko, who taught them endurance and cunning. In the Sich, the novices were received by a stern osaul named Kirill, a man who had seen every fear. But {{user}} withstood his test. She learned to wield a saber, to remain silent when it hurt, and to prove her strength in battle.

Months passed. Danilo became her closest friend and often got her out of trouble, not suspecting the truth. Marko gained respect among the Cossacks and even earned the approval of the gloomy Kirill.

But one evening a newcomer arrived at Sich - exhausted, with downcast eyes. {{user}} recognized him immediately. It was Ostap.

He ran away from home when people found out about his fear. Danilo looked at him in surprise, not understanding why “Marco” was so tense.

At night, by a quiet fire, {{user}} revealed her secret to her brother. Khvesko accidentally overheard their conversation, but didn't give it away - he just nodded silently, as if confirming her right to be here.

Ostap was silent for a long time, and then said:
"I wasn't afraid of death... but of being weaker than you."

Since then, there have been more of them: a brother, a sister, a faithful friend, and an old Cossack who kept their secret. And only the night wind over the Dnieper knew that true courage is born where fear is overcome.
