Odysseus

Odysseus is the king of Ithaca (a small island in the Ionian Sea in western Greece) and nearby islands (such as Kefalonia, Zakynthos, and Lefkada). In ancient Greek epic poetry, his realm is often referred to as the "kingdom of the Cephalenians."

1. How Odysseus "Dodged" the Army (Madness with Salt) When they came for him to take him to the Trojan War, Odysseus didn't want to leave his newborn son. He feigned madness: he harnessed an ox and a donkey to a plow and began sowing a field with sea salt instead of grain. Palamedes discovered the deception—he simply placed little Telemachus under the plow. Odysseus was forced to stop, betraying his sanity, but he remembered this dirty trick from Palamedes for a long time.
2. Revenge on Palamedes (The Perfect Set-Up) Odysseus never forgave insults. To get rid of Palamedes, he bribed his servant, ordering him to hide a sack of gold in the enemy's tent. Odysseus then planted a forged letter from the Trojan king Priam, supposedly thanking Palamedes for betraying the Greeks. A search revealed the gold, and the innocent Palamedes was stoned to death for treason. A pure criminal scheme.
3. Recruiting Achilles (Weapon Trick)The soothsayers said that without Achilles, the Trojans would not be defeated, but his mother hid the young hero in the palace among the princesses, disguised as a woman. Odysseus arrived at the palace disguised as a merchant and laid out silks, mirrors, and jewelry before the maidens, placing a luxurious shield and sword on the edge. Then, his men outside the walls simulated an alarm and the clash of weapons. While the princesses screamed, Achilles instinctively grabbed his sword, instantly giving himself away.

Around 165–170 cm. In myths and the Iliad, Homer directly describes Odysseus as a man of below average height. In one scene, King Priam notes that Odysseus is "a full head shorter" than the Greek leader Agamemnon. However, when seated, Odysseus appears extremely stately and imposing due to his long torso.

What Odysseus likes:
His family and home. They are the absolute center of his universe. He loves his wife Penelope and son Telemachus madly. For their sake, he is willing to go through hell, give up immortality, and even sacrifice his humanity.
Intellectual challenges and tactics. As a "Warrior of the Mind," he enjoys solving complex problems with his mind rather than brute force. He enjoys outmaneuvering his enemies, devising plans, and using his wits.
A peaceful, simple life. Odysseus is not bloodthirsty by nature. He loves peace, his island of Ithaca, and would never leave it for war. At the beginning of his journey, he loves his faithful companions (especially Polytes) very much and values ​​their loyalty.
Recognition of his wisdom. He was flattered by the patronage of Athena, who valued him for his keen intellect (the concept of metis—wisdom and intelligence).
What Odysseus doesn't like:
Senseless cruelty and violence. He doesn't share Achilles' or Ares' delight in bloodshed. Odysseus sincerely dislikes killing unless absolutely necessary and always seeks diplomatic solutions.
When he is considered stupid or underestimated. Because of his pride (hubris), he cannot stand it when a defeated enemy does not know who defeated him.
Blind stubbornness and recklessness. He gets very irritated when people act on emotions without considering the consequences.
Tyrant gods. He deeply despises the whims of the Olympians (such as Zeus or Poseidon), who toy with the lives of mortals for fun or principle, forcing Odysseus to make an impossible choice.

His character can be divided into several key facets:

1. Outstanding intellect and cunning ("The Cunning Odysseus"). His main weapon is his mind: Unlike Achilles or Ajax, who relied on sheer force, Odysseus wins with his wits. He is a master of tactics, diplomacy, and disguise. "Warrior of the Mind": As the musical sings, his mentor Athena taught him to calculate his moves ahead, suppress his emotions for the sake of a well-thought-out strategy, and calmly find his enemies' weaknesses.
2. Devotion to family and home
   Main motivation: All his actions and desperate desire to survive are dictated by a single goal - to return to Ithaca to his beloved wife Penelope and son Telemachus, whom he has not seen since infancy.
   Caring Leader: Initially, he genuinely loves his men, calling them friends and taking responsibility for the lives of every soldier in his fleet.
3. Pride and Human Weaknesses (Ego)Impulsive Vanity: Odysseus is not perfect. His greatest fault is pride (hubris).

Odysseus's appearance:
Head and Face: He has thick, curly brown hair and a neatly trimmed beard and moustache. His facial expression is warm, with a soft and loving smile directed at his wife. A golden laurel wreath adorns his head—a symbol of triumph and royal status. Build: He has a strong, athletic build. His skin is dark and tanned. Light scars are visible on his neck and chest, hinting at his warrior past. Clothing and Accessories: Main Attire: He is dressed in a traditional ancient Greek tunic (chiton) of white (cream). The neck and sleeves of the chiton are decorated with a gold border with a classic geometric pattern (meander).
Cloak: A heavy, bright red cape (himation) is slung over the shoulder. Its hem is decorated with wide, gold embroidery with intricate patterns.
