Crash Bandicoot

Crash's personality is difficult to define. Throughout his career, he has always shown himself to be helpful and very considerate of others. But, in general, he has a rather eccentric and cartoonish personality. However, despite this, Crash is usually kind, altruistic, humble, and calm. He is not known for his anger; even towards his greatest enemies, he rarely holds a grudge or harbors much resentment. Threatening his little sister seems to be one of the few ways to trigger his aggression. However, one must be careful with his appetite, as he is very protective of his Wumpa Fruit, his favorite food.

Crash is so emotional that he laughs and cries easily. Although he has a reckless, danger-loving nature and enjoys fighting, he prefers relaxing in the sun and rarely goes looking for trouble. Crash is prone to uncouth personal habits, such as burping or scratching his bottom. Crash is also easily distracted. He's also quite oblivious to his surroundings, but this could be due to his mutism.

Crash's intelligence level was questionable, as he is mute and Aku Aku even commented that brain damage "wasn't a great danger to Crash," and he was often described as stupid or clumsy. However, this may have been a joke, especially since he is shown to be intelligent enough to evade Cortex's attempts to get rid of him in Twinsanity and has been able to outwit several bosses much more powerful than himself in the past, such as Tiny and N. Tropy, or drive various vehicles, such as jeeps, motorcycles, cars, and planes, and manipulate some machines, robots, and titans.

The things he does that seem silly could be better attributed to his obviously impulsive nature. His muteness never seems to cause him any problems, since Aku Aku and Coco can understand him anyway. His sense of right and wrong is also intact, as he helps those in need.

Crash is an anthropomorphic Eastern bandicoot with orange fur, green eyes, and red hair on his head in most of his appearances, styled in a mohawk. Crash's proportions are simple and cartoonish, with a large head directly connected to his body without a defined neck. He has a black nose, bushy eyebrows, an orange-yellow belly, and a peach-colored snout.

Crash usually wears fingerless gloves, blue jeans/shorts, and red high-top sneakers with white soles featuring animal prints and laces. He also wears pink underwear with red hearts or white underwear with red hearts. He's known for donning other outfits when necessary, such as scuba gear, a motorcycle jacket, and many others.

Crash's most common ability is his tornado spin, in which he spins rapidly to strike a nearby opponent. The power of this attack varies, to the point where he can spin continuously or even float in the air while using it, though these enhancements usually appear as power-ups. He can also spin objects, living or inanimate, to increase his hitting radius. He can jump over opponents, as well as slide and body slam.

In the games that begin with Crash Bandicoot: Warped, Crash is shown to be able to drive a variety of vehicles, such as a motorcycle, a jet submarine, a jeep, and a biplane.

In Crash Bandicoot, Crash can only jump and spin. In Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, Crash gains the ability to slide, crawl, burrow, and body slam. In Crash Bandicoot: Warped, his burrowing ability is removed, although the game introduces five superpowers, which are obtained by defeating a boss battle.

Coco Bandicoot:

Coco shares many traits with his older brother Crash. Physically, they are usually depicted as being the same height. In most appearances where both are playable, they have similar or identical abilities (spinning, sliding, etc.). Besides adventuring together, they both love to relax and laze around.

Aku Aku:

Aku Aku calls Crash and Coco his children, protects them, and guides them on their adventures, so he could be considered a father figure to them. Although Dr. Cortex begins to see Crash as his son in Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time, he never does so with Coco.

Tawna Bandicoot:

In Crash 4, Crash and Coco meet a Tawna from an alternate universe, who rejects their request to join them and leaves. Coco seems upset by this, and Crash comforts her. Tawna accepts their friendship after they defeat both Dr. N. Tropys, and at the end of the story, they play a video game together.

Spyro:

Spyro appears in Crash Bandicoot Purple: Ripto's Rampage and Spyro Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy, two crossover games between the Crash and Spyro series. Crash and Spyro fight when they first meet because Ripto's henchmen have been altered to resemble Spyro and Crash in their respective worlds. However, after this fight, they realize they have been tricked by their arch-enemies and join forces to thwart Cortex and Ripto's plan.

Early History

Crash Bandicoot was evolved by Dr. Neo Cortex using the Evolvo Ray on July 19. Before being sent to the Cortex Vortex, Crash was Bandicoot's number one test subject, tested by Cortex and Dr. Nitrus Brio on January 1, 1996. He was previously known simply as "Subject," but on September 9, 1996, he was given the name Crash (short for Crashworth Cortex I).

Crash Bandicoot

In Crash Bandicoot, Crash began as an ordinary bandicoot. Over time, he became a test subject for Dr. Neo Cortex's animal mutation experiments. Using Dr. Nitrus Brio's "Evolvo Ray" device, Cortex altered Crash's genetic structure and brain capacity, transforming him into an anthropomorphic marsupial. Crash was then subjected to the Cortex Vortex, an untested device that, in theory, would turn him into an obedient servant of Cortex and, more broadly, the Cortex Commandos. The Cortex Vortex failed to change Crash's mind, and he was dismissed as a failed experiment. As Cortex attempts to capture Crash, he jumps out of a window of Cortex Castle and falls into the ocean.

Upon reaching the highest room of Cortex's Castle, Crash sets it ablaze and escapes in Cortex's airship with Tawna. The final battle begins abruptly when Cortex confronts Crash while he's riding a hoverboard. The battle ends when Crash fires one of Cortex's plasma blasts at his hoverboard, which misses and self-destructs, sending Cortex plummeting a great distance. Crash and Tawna reunite and fly off in Cortex's airship into the sunset.

Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back

A year later, Crash was relaxing in the woods with his little sister, Coco Bandicoot, when she woke him up and asked him to find a new battery for her laptop. Before he could get far, he was kidnapped by Neo Cortex and taken to a teleportation room. Cortex claimed to have "changed" and asked Crash for help. He tasked Crash with gathering the 25 other heroes to stop a deadly "planetary alignment" that threatened to destroy Earth.

Meanwhile, N. Brio, angry with Cortex for replacing him with Dr. N. Gin, orders Crash to gather 42 gems to destroy Cortex's space station and warns him that he will do everything to stop him from collecting the crystals. Since Crash couldn't collect them all alone, he enlisted the help of a polar bear named Polar, whom he later adopted. Coco hacks into Cortex's communications and suspects his plans.

After defeating Ripper Roo, the Komodo Brothers, and Tiny Tiger, who worked for N. Brio, and collecting 20 crystals, Cortex warns Crash not to trust Brio and orders him to deliver the crystals to N. Gin. Instead, Crash defeats N. Gin, infuriating Cortex, who demands Crash bring the crystals to him. Crash collects all 25 crystals; Coco discovers the truth: the planetary alignment was a hoax, and Cortex actually intended to use the crystals in his new and improved Cortex Vortex to brainwash everyone.

Crash catches up to Cortex, who grabs the crystals and tries to escape into space using a jetpack. Crash, who is faster with his own jetpack, dodges all the obstacles in his path, destroying Cortex's jetpack and sending him floating into deep space. Crash gathers the 42 gems, which Brio uses to build a powerful laser to destroy the Cortex Vortex, and leaves Crash with the honor of activating the laser. Along with Brio and Coco, he watches as the station explodes into a thousand pieces.

Crash Bandicoot: Warped

After Cortex Vortex is destroyed by N. Brio's gem-powered laser, its remains plummet into Earth's atmosphere, destroying a prison-temple that contained a great evil.

Meanwhile, Crash, Aku Aku, Polar, and Coco are relaxing at home until Aku Aku hears an evil laugh echoing through the air, revealing it to be Uka Uka, his evil twin brother whom he imprisoned long ago. Uka Uka allies himself with Cortex, and together they plot, with the help of Uka Uka's partner, N. Tropy, to gather the crystals to power a rebuilt Cortex Vortex. Fearing what Uka Uka might do, Aku Aku leads Crash and Coco to use N. Tropy's Time Twister machine to collect the powerful crystals scattered throughout time. Crash and Coco gather five crystals, and Crash once again outsmarts Tiny Tiger in ancient Rome. Ten crystals are enough for Crash to travel to the Ice Age and defeat Dingodile. While in prehistoric times, Crash rides on the back of a baby T-Rex, whom he adopts as a pet and names Baby T. Collecting 15 crystals allows Crash to knock out Tropy. 20 crystals allow Coco (with the help of her new pet tiger, Pura, halfway there) to bring down N. Gin in space. After collecting all 25 crystals, Crash and Aku Aku battle Cortex and Uka Uka. Crash and Aku Aku emerge victorious.

However, Cortex and Uka Uka still have a chance to collect the 42 gems and use them instead of the crystals. After collecting the rest of the gems, Crash and Aku Aku face Cortex and Uka Uka again, defeating them for good when the Time-Twister machine, unable to sustain itself, implodes. Crash and Aku Aku escape, but Cortex, Uka Uka, and N. Tropy are sucked into the wormhole and trapped in the distant past. As Crash, Coco, and their respective pets relax around the fire, Aku Aku reflects on what has happened to his enemies.

Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time

Following Crash's latest triumph, Uka Uka attempts to free himself, Dr. Neo Cortex, and Dr. N. Tropy from their prison in the past. His final attempt tears a hole in the fabric of space-time, plunging him into a deep sleep from exhaustion. Cortex and N. Tropy quickly escape, leaving Uka Uka behind, and discover that the Quantum Rift they used connects their universe to the rest of the multiverse, leading them to decide to harness it to conquer all dimensions. To ensure their success, the pair create the Rift Generator, capable of opening other Quantum Rifts, and enlist the help of Dr. N. Gin and Dr. N. Brio to build an army against potential enemy interference. Meanwhile, Aku Aku, Uka Uka's older twin brother, senses the disturbance in space and time emanating from the N. Sanity peak and orders Crash to investigate. Upon arriving, he encounters Lani-Loli, whom Aku Aku recognizes as one of the Quantum Masks—four ancient healer masks that possess great power over space and time, and which would only appear if something had opened the multiverse. Lani spots a rift and suspects trouble is brewing, leading Crash and his sister Coco to agree to follow him across the multiverse to find the other Quantum Masks, while confronting the anarchy being wrought by the evil doctor.

The pair arrive at Hazardous Wastes, where N. Gin suddenly appears to warn them that he'll be working harder and tells them to get ready for his metal concert with his new mecha: the "Massive Percussion Weapon." As Crash and Coco head to the concert, they hear a mysterious being attaching the "Doom Rig" to a chain. After dodging the monster truck, Crash and Coco arrive at the concert, where they defeat the doctor and his "Massive Percussion Weapon." On their way to rescue Akano from Louise's clutches in "Salty Wharf," the Bandicoots end up being captured by pirates. However, the mysterious being manages to stop the pirates and rescue Crash and Coco, revealing herself to be an alternate version of Tawna. They are overjoyed to see each other, but Tawna refuses to explain what happened to Crash and Coco in their own dimension and insists on acting on her own. After confronting and defeating Louise, Akano joins the Bandicoots.

Crash and Coco arrive at Tranquility Falls. N. Brio suddenly appears and tells them to go to his training grounds to claim a reward for defeating his creatures. Tawna encounters the doctor just as he's about to throw a beaker containing a potion at the Bandicoot. She surprises him, causing him to miss. However, when Tawna prepares to fight Brio herself, he escapes using his beakers. Later, Crash and Coco arrive at Brio's training grounds to confront him. After sustaining serious injuries, he drinks the potion and transforms into a gigantic creature to crush the Bandicoots. Akano manages to help Crash and Coco expel him from his enclosure; however, N. Brio survives his defeat by transforming into a pterodactyl in an attempt to deliver the final blow. He ends up laying an egg, which Crash takes and flies away in despair, much to Coco's surprise. Meanwhile, in Mosquito Marsh, Dingodile, who has recently retired from villainy to run his own restaurant, finds himself in chaos when his business is set on fire by a rival restaurant. He is then sucked into another dimension by a Quantum Rift after taking revenge on a group of Wumpashiners who had blown up his establishment. From there, he travels through dimensions in search of a home where he can rebuild his restaurant. When Crash and Coco cross the swamp, Kupuna-Wa joins the duo.

Crash and Coco enter the 11th Dimension, where they hear a warning message from a hologram of Cortex; he warns them not to freeze while they try to find him on the mountain. When the Bandicoots reach a ship, the doctor pulls out a button that will make it explode when pressed, intending to blow them to bits, but he sneezes hard and accidentally presses the button too soon, so his plan fails. While Crash and Coco climb the mountain, Tawna finds a button and, when she presses it, a platform full of Nitro crates rises up, which the Bandicoots use to advance with the help of Kupuna-Wa. The Bandicoots use Polar to chase Cortex back to his airship, where the doctor awaits their arrival. Following his confrontation with Cortex, N. Tropy betrays him, revealing that he and his new partner—who turns out to be an alternate version of himself from Tawna's universe—intend to use the Rift Generator's power to reset the timeline across all dimensions, effectively becoming gods. They plunge the multiverse into chaos and then plan to erase Cortex, the Bandicoots, and the Masks from existence. Enraged, Cortex agrees to ally with the Bandicoots.

The three arrive in the Eggipus Dimension, where they rescue the last Quantum Mask, Ika-Ika. They eventually reach the orbit of Bermugula, where they reunite with Dingodile and Tawna. Together, they see Dr. Tropy on a television screen with Nitros Oxide. Dr. N. Tropy orders Oxide to take his ship to the planet Bermugula to protect the Rift Generator, prompting Cortex to fight his way through the interior of his space station to prevent him from leaving. Later, Cortex reaches the control panel and presses a large red button that paralyzes the ship. When Crash and Coco arrive at the ship, Tawna captures them and leaves them tied up while she heads off to confront Dr. Tropy at the Rift Generator. After Dingodile and Cortex free Crash and Coco, they encounter Tawna attempting to confront the Tropy doctors, and Dr. N. Tropy mockingly reveals that she herself killed Crash and Coco in Tawna's dimension. The Bandicoots defeat the doctors, allowing the Quantum Masks to destroy the Rift Generator and seal away all spacetime disturbances.

However, when the group takes a celebratory trip to Neon City in the Sn@xx Dimension, Cortex accidentally kidnaps Kupuna-Wa and uses her powers to travel back in time to 1996 (the year of his first attempt at world domination) in order to prevent the fiasco known as the creation of Crash. Ultimately, the doctor is unable to convince his past self to capture and evolve a wombat instead of the past Crash for the experiment, and to kill the present Crash, Coco, and Aku Aku, who have followed him from the future. When the Quantum Masks banish him to the end of the universe, the past Cortex proceeds with the experiment, preparing to brainwash the past Crash with the Cortex Vortex. The present Crash inadvertently destroys the Vortex's power source, causing it to malfunction and fail to brainwash his past self, thus ensuring his own creation through a causal loop. Dingodile rebuilds and reopens his restaurant, Cortex relaxes at the edge of the universe and enjoys the peace and quiet, and Crash, Coco, Tawna, Aku Aku, and the Quantum Masks play video games at their home on N. Sanity Island. After an epilogue narrated by Crash detailing the fates and whereabouts of the game's characters, Cortex's relaxation is interrupted by the sudden appearance of Uka Uka.
