Spyro The Dragon

Spyro is known for being brave, stubborn, enthusiastic, and arrogant. He has an unwavering sense of heroism and kindness, and a fiery personality. He is not overly concerned with his safety and can sometimes be irresponsible, as he is extremely curious and almost never cautious, which can get him into trouble. Spyro gets into many mischievous pranks and is known for being conceited, a trait that can lead to his downfall and cause him to make mistakes.

Although he has lived through so many adventures, his personality has not changed except that he is now more mature and friendly, even his tone has softened.

Spyro is a small purple dragon with a yellow crest and horns on his head, yellow wings with orange membranes, a yellow spine at the tip of his tail, a yellow-covered belly, purple eyes with prominent eyebrows, and gray claws.

Spyro's main attacks consist of ramming his opponents with his horns and breathing fire. Because he is young, Spyro isn't a very good flier and can't breathe a continuous stream of fire; instead, he only spits out arrow-shaped bursts of fire and glides from place to place.

As Spyro grows, he learns to use his wings as a shield, to swim underwater, to double jump, to dive headfirst, to fly, and to shoot a continuous stream of fire, fireballs, and even flamethrowers from his mouth.

He knows how to use elemental breaths such as ice, wind, electric, bubbles and water, but he does not use them of his own free will, needing external help such as that of fairies, the spirit dragon and runes to be able to use them.

He knows how to use magic spells thanks to the Dragon Elders, and even how to use a martial art, the Dragon-Kata, under the tutelage of the Sensei.

Sparx, the dragonfly

Few words are needed to describe the strong bond between these two; though they rarely express it verbally, they've been best friends from the start. Sparx has protected Spyro from certain death at the hands of his enemies on numerous occasions. However, despite being best friends, a dragonfly is naturally meant to protect young dragons in Spyro's world. Generally, they're never seen far from each other.

When Sparx was kidnapped by Ripto's magic in Enter the Dragonfly, Spyro was visibly saddened by the loss of his best friend, but he was soon overjoyed and relieved when they were reunited.

Gnasty Gnorc

During Gnasty's reign of terror over Dragon Realms, Spyro verbally admitted on numerous occasions that he felt great contempt for the Gnorc king and was determined to overthrow him for turning all the other dragons into crystal statues. After defeating his entire army of Gnorcs and finally confronting him, Gnasty chose to flee during the battle, suggesting that perhaps he was afraid of Spyro.

Hunter

Besides Sparx, Hunter was one of Spyro's best friends and allies. However, the two seemed to have a playful rivalry, as they almost always competed against each other in various activities, usually including racing, skateboarding, collecting objects, and so on. Spyro and Hunter met when Spyro was transported to Glimmer, one of the worlds of Avalar, by the Professor. At first, Hunter was afraid of dragons, as they are usually described as large, powerful, and ferocious creatures. This fear turned to surprise and disbelief when he first saw Spyro (possibly due to his small stature), whom he didn't underestimate. Since Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!, the two have been close friends.

In Spyro: Year of the Dragon, Hunter began to develop romantic feelings for Bianca, one of Spyro's former enemies. After Spyro defeated the Sorceress for the first time, it was shown that the feelings were mutual, and Spyro felt he had lost his friend to "the plague of love." Contrary to Spyro's belief, Hunter and Bianca revealed that they were more concerned for his well-being during their battle against the Sorceress. So Spyro's friendship with Bianca remained intact, and he even gained a new friend in the process.

Elora

Spyro met Elora when he first arrived in Glimmer, but they weren't formally introduced until Spyro reached Summerwood. Even when they first met, Elora had great faith in Spyro and sincerely believed he would be the one to end Ripto's tyranny over Avalar. She was very informative and kind, and she helped him many times during his mission. When Spyro finally defeated Ripto, Elora personally rewarded him with a kiss on the forehead. Although Spyro seemed more surprised by this gesture than anything else, being a "young" dragon, Spyro doesn't seem interested in things like romance or affection, which led to him missing his chance with Elora in the original epilogue of Ripto's Rage! However, the two remain quite close.

Ember

Ember, a pink dragon, was Spyro's friend, but she dreamed of marrying him. She constantly talked about liking each other, getting engaged, and so on. But Spyro only saw her as a friend. In Shadow Legacy, Ember falls in love with an armadillo named Bandit. After this, she never flirts with Spyro again, suggesting that she dumped him for her new lover. Spyro seems to be okay with it, as they see each other as just friends.

Crash Bandicoot

Initially, Spyro viewed Crash Bandicoot as an enemy who had to be stopped after being tricked by Ripto and Dr. Neo Cortex. When both he and Crash discovered they had been deceived, Spyro willingly joined Bandicoot and Aku Aku to defeat their respective arch-enemies and save their friends and their worlds. At the end of their adventure, Spyro and Crash parted amicably (with Crash giving Spyro a friendly headbutt) and have even crossed paths again in other Crash Bandicoot titles, such as Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled and Crash Bandicoot: On the Run! Their close friendship is similar to that of the Bash brothers, as they both participate in competitive tournaments and stop bad guys together.

According to an interview with Sparx conducted by the Dragon News Network (DNN), some details of Spyro's past are known and can be verified. Sparx used to crawl around Spyro's egg when he was a larva, during a time of peace in the Dragon Realms. Spyro is, in fact, a craftsman dragon and may have been born on Stone Hill.

Dragon Realms

In Spyro the Dragon, Gnasty Gnorc attacked Dragon Realms and froze all the dragons in crystal statues after being mocked and insulted by Lindar in DNN. The young Spyro and Sparx were the only ones unaffected by Gnasty's magic spell, since Spyro was smaller than the other dragons, and they embarked on a journey across Dragon Realms to free the other dragons and recover their treasure. After traveling through all six territories of Dragon Realms (including Gnasty's Kingdom, the former Dragon Vault), freeing all 80 dragons, recovering 14,000 treasures, finding the 12 dragon eggs, and getting rid of Gnasty Gnorc's henchmen, Spyro and Sparx challenged, pursued, and defeated Gnasty Gnorc.

During an interview about Spyro's victory, the young dragon remarked that a good battle requires a good opponent, revealing that Gnasty Gnorc was a worthy adversary despite his flawed nature. This led to the dragons being trapped in crystal once again by an unseen figure (presumably Gnasty Gnorc), and Spyro looked forward to another adventure. Some time later, Spyro treated himself and Sparx to a vacation at Dragon Shores, a theme park in the Dragon Realms operated by the friendly, reformed Gnorcs.

Endorse

In Spyro 2: Ripto's Wrath!, during a long period of rain, Spyro and Sparx decided they needed a vacation away from the Dragon Realms. Seeing the portal that led to Dragon Shores and remembering they hadn't been there since defeating Gnasty Gnorc, Spyro and Sparx entered the portal to escape the bad weather.

However, to their surprise, they arrived in a kingdom called Avalar because the Professor, Elora the Fauna, Zoe the Fairy, and Hunter the Cheetah had redirected the portal network to bring Spyro and Sparx there. After a moment of confusion, they encountered a dictator named Ripto, who was furious that the residents had brought a dragon to Avalar. A brief fight ensued, ending with Ripto fleeing into Avalar's Summer Forest after his magic scepter fell into the jaws of his dinosaur-like mount, Gulp. At Elora's request, Spyro and Sparx explored the realms of Avalar and retrieved several talismans, then pursued Ripto and battled one of his henchmen, Crush.

After Crush was crushed under a pile of rocks, Ripto and Gulp escaped to the Autumn Plains, and Spyro and Sparx collected the remaining Avalar talismans and gave chase. Spyro and Sparx caught up with Ripto and fought his mount, Gulp. Elora helped them by providing weapons to use against Gulp. Ripto fell from the fighting arena after the battle, and Elora gave Spyro a place to rest while she returned to the professor to check on a portal that would allow Spyro and Sparx to return home.

Spyro and Sparx decided to search for Elora and found themselves in Winter Tundra. There, they learned that Ripto was still alive and had locked Elora and the others outside the Tundra Castle. Once again, Spyro and Sparx were tasked with traveling through the local portals and, this time, retrieving enough orbs to challenge Ripto. They succeeded and challenged Ripto to a duel. Zoe informed Spyro and Sparx that the professor was working on new types of orbs, and a fierce battle ensued, with both Spyro and Ripto using the orbs' powers to attack. Ripto used an orb to deploy a mechanized, oversized version of his steed, Gulp. When Spyro destroyed it, Ripto used another orb to transform the arena floor into lava, while simultaneously creating a giant mechanical bird to help finish off Spyro and Sparx. Spyro battled them in an aerial duel and defeated Ripto, sending him (supposedly) to his death in the lava pool. Spyro and Sparx were then sent back to Dragon Shores to begin their vacation.

In the epilogue, it was revealed that Spyro visited Avalar sometime after his vacation, participated in a hot tub party with the Chef, missed his chance with Elora while riding the Dragon Shores Love Boat attraction, and faced off against the black sheep of a flock of sheep.

Forgotten Worlds

In Spyro: Year of the Dragon, the Dragon Realms were celebrating an important event: the Year of the Dragon Festival. Every twelve years, during this period, the fairies deliver new dragon eggs to the Dragon Realms, which will become the next generation of dragons. This year, the fairies delivered 150 eggs to the Dragon Realms. The dragons celebrated until they were exhausted and fell asleep. While they slept, a mysterious rabbit girl named Bianca arrived with a group of Rhynocs to steal the dragon eggs. The dragons awoke and realized their new batch of dragon eggs was gone and found Bianca about to steal the last remaining egg. Spyro, Sparx, and Hunter tried to stop Bianca, but it was too late. She took the egg through a hole to the realm where dragons once lived: the Forgotten Worlds. Her teacher, known as the Sorceress, was beginning to lose her magic, as the dragons, the source of the world's magic, had migrated to the other side of the world. She took the dragon eggs with the intention of using them in a spell to gain eternal life and power.

Since the older dragons couldn't fit through the holes the Rhynocs had left, they decided that only Spyro was small enough to go to the Forgotten Worlds and retrieve the 150 eggs. Hunter insisted on going with him and, after struggling through the hole, managed to join Spyro and Sparx.

The Sorceress, along with Bianca, created monsters to defend herself against Spyro, but he defeated them one by one. Along the way, Spyro recruited four new allies, including Sheila the kangaroo, Sergeant Byrd the flying penguin, Bentley the yeti, and Agent 9, the monkey in the Professor's service—all prisoners of Moneybags at the Sorceress's behest. When Spyro and Sparx reached Midnight Mountain, Bianca realized the lengths to which her mistress was willing to go to gain power. She betrayed the Sorceress and joined Spyro's side, freeing Hunter from a trap and opening the door to the Sorceress's lair with the magic of the 100 dragon eggs Spyro had found. In a great battle, Spyro defeated the Sorceress; however, she did not die. He had to recover 149 of the missing eggs, as well as 20,000 gems, to fight her again in a secret region of the Forgotten Realms. After taking control of a spaceship, Spyro defeated the Sorceress once and for all, recovering the last egg and saving the dragons from extinction.

Fairy Realms Crisis

In Spyro: Season of Ice, after Spyro saved the dragon eggs from the Sorceress's clutches, Spyro, Hunter, and Bianca returned from the Forgotten Worlds and decided to take a vacation. Bianca was looking for vacation spots in the Sorceress's library when she dropped her spellbook. It was found by the humble librarian, Grendor. Seeing that it could make him incredibly intelligent, he found the desired spell and recited it. Unfortunately for him, he misread the spell, causing him to grow an extra head and develop a terrible headache. Grendor then used his newfound magic to freeze all the fairies and scatter them across the Fairy Realms.

When Zoe found out, she quickly alerted Spyro in a letter before being captured herself. Spyro, Sparx, Hunter, and Bianca ascended to the Fairy Realms to rescue the one hundred frozen fairies, including Zoe. When Spyro entered the first world, he discovered that the Rhynocs had infested the Fairy Realms. Spyro managed to defeat all the Rhynocs and, finally, Grendor, freeing all the fairies.

Ripto's Return

In Spyro 2: Season of Flame, after Spyro and Sparx's return from the Fairy Realms, Ripto returned to exact his final revenge on the dragons by scattering all the fireflies—the creatures whose magical properties give dragons their fiery breath—across the Dragon Realms. The dragons' breath turned icy cold as Spyro and Sparx embarked on a quest to find the fireflies. Finally, after rescuing all the fireflies, Spyro once again defeated Ripto, who was banished by the Dragon Elders.

Ripto's Revenge

In Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly, Spyro, Sparx, Hunter, and Bianca were celebrating the baby dragons they had previously rescued receiving their dragonflies. Unfortunately, Ripto escaped from banishment and ruined the party, scattering 90 of the 151 dragonflies across the Dragon Realms. Spyro and Sparx set out to find them all.

Finally, Spyro and Sparx cleared the nine worlds connected to the Dragon Realms and entered Ripto's portal using the combined magic of all the dragonflies. They entered Ripto's portal, and he created a fireproof shield to protect himself. Spyro destroyed the shield and defeated Ripto. But just when Spyro thought he had Ripto on the verge of defeat, Ripto used a magic spell to double his size and created a barrier of fire, rendering Spyro's fire breath useless.

Spyro used his ice breath to break down the barrier and freeze Ripto. Finally, in a last act of desperation, Ripto used his magic to grow even larger and incorporate parts of Crush and Gulp into his body. Spyro easily brought the monster down with his electric breath. Upon being defeated, Ripto cursed Spyro. Spyro discovered that Ripto's magic didn't work properly because he was a dinosaur, and as such, his magical properties couldn't sustain the proper use of magic. This has led to Ripto's hatred of dragons and is the reason he is so relentless in destroying them. The Dragon Elders banished Ripto once again, and the Dragon Realms were safe once more.

The Stolen Laboratory

In Spyro: Attack of the Rhynocs, Ripto attempted another invasion and succeeded in taking over the professor's laboratory, expelling Spyro and Sparx. Spyro and Sparx were then tasked with traveling across the realms to retrieve twelve "hearts" from different realms in order to open a passage back to the professor's laboratory and confront Ripto once more. Spyro and Sparx succeeded, re-entering the laboratory and facing Ripto. After defeating him, Ripto was subdued by Butler, the professor's malfunctioning robot, and Spyro used a teleportation device to send Ripto and Butler to an unknown location.

Heroic Team Up

In Spyro Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy, Ripto teamed up with Dr. Neo Cortex to get rid of his enemies, Spyro and Crash Bandicoot. They began by genetically modifying Ripto's "Riptoc" henchmen and disguising them as Crash and Spyro, leading the two protagonists to believe they were at odds with each other. Crash and Spyro are alerted to the dire situation in their respective worlds and are sent to eliminate the disguised Riptocs. Crash and Spyro eventually meet in Dragon Castles, each believing the other to be a Riptoc in disguise, but they soon discover they've both been tricked and decide to join forces against Ripto and Cortex. Ultimately, Spyro, Sparx, Crash, and Aku Aku defeat both Cortex and Ripto. The two heroes thank each other, and the game ends with a shot of Crash holding Spyro in a friendly hug.

The Traitorous Elder

In Spyro: A Hero's Tail, Spyro discovers that the world is being plunged into darkness, this time by an evil Elder Dragon from long ago named Red. Spyro and Sparx team up with Hunter, Sergeant Byrd, and Blink the Mole to defeat Red and his unholy alliance of Gnorcs, along with Gnasty Gnorc and Ineptune. The five heroes battled across new worlds and ultimately defeated Red. However, Red escaped to his laboratory and built an army of robots by turning Gnorcs into robots with the professor's unwitting help.

Finally, Spyro located Red in his secret laboratory, where the evil dragon had turned himself into a robot due to a mistake by Spyro. Spyro defeated him again, and the professor shrunk Red down to a very small size so he couldn't attack Dragon Realms again.

The Shadow Realm

In Spyro: Shadow Legacy, Spyro and Sparx returned to the Dragon Realms to rest and prepare for school, but the realms were in ruins due to an unknown evil force. They soon discovered that a villain called the Sorcerer was trying to take over the world using dark, shadowy mirrors in each realm (called the Shadow Realms). Spyro learned the art of Dragon Kata and the use of magic from the Dragon Elders and set out to rescue the Sorcerer's captives and defeat him.

After freeing Dragon Realms and Avalar from the shadowy influences, Spyro found Red in the Forgotten Worlds. After defeating him, it became clear that Red was merely a pawn in the Sorcerer's plan to destroy the world. Red decided to change his ways and help Spyro defeat the Sorcerer. When Spyro reached the Sorcerer's lair, he revealed himself to be a four-winged dragon who, like Spyro, was also purple. The two clashed in combat, and when Spyro won, the Sorcerer escaped before completely losing his power. Spyro returned to the Dragon Realms, and a parade was held in his honor, during which Red was welcomed back to Dragon Realms and made peace with the other Elders (except Titan). Afterward, Spyro and his friends prepared for the Sorcerer's next move.
