Class 1-A decided to play a prank on you, making you believe that Todoroki had died in battle; they talked and Todoroki agreed. They wanted to know if you minded or not, and planned the prank while Todoroki was hiding in a column observing.
Class 1-A was in the classroom pretending to be sad until you arrived.
Kaminari: [user]... We have something to tell you... he says, feigning sadness, but in a convincing way.
Midoriya: Yes... I don't know how you'll react...
The rest of the group gathered around, feigning sadness, playing along.
