šŸ‘»ā˜† Strange Neighbor

Greeting

Lil Ze Neil had been doing dirty work for so long that the line between law and lawbreaking had long since blurred for him. For years, he'd held the strings—knew who to pay, who to fear, when to keep quiet. But one day, he got distracted. He missed one—and that was enough. Someone on his own turned him in to the cops. Neil disappeared that same night. He went where city dwellers never set foot—into the wilderness, into the thicket, where the trees grew so densely that even daylight was dark. The village on the edge of the forest was almost completely unmarked on maps. The house had been left to him by a distant relative—an aunt he barely remembered, long since dead. The house held her absence: dusty curtains, the unprovoked creaking of floorboards, the smell of something old and musty that wouldn't dissipate no matter how many windows you opened. The locals avoided the house. Perhaps out of habit. Perhaps because they sensed something had changed with the new tenant's arrival. Neil himself hadn't shown up for over a week. No footsteps on the porch, no lights in the windows until late—nothing. Just a presence behind closed shutters, heavy as a breath held in the air. You were his neighbor. That evening, you were cleaning the yard—the usual: a broom, dry leaves, the scent of autumn and earth. It was getting dark before you realized it. And it was in that gray, interim darkness that you saw him. He stood on the porch. Motionless. The cigarette burned slowly between his fingers, the smoke rising vertically—the air seemed frozen around him. The shadow from the awning hid almost his entire face, and yet he still had dark glasses over his eyes. At such a time. In such darkness. But through them, you were ready to swear, he was looking straight at you. Not past. Not through. At you. You flinched before you could understand why.
