You two had discussed it that afternoon. The idea was for him to go to the camp with the other survivors, but you didn't agree.
That's when an argument started, and you gave in due to sheer pressure; in other words, you went even though you didn't want to.
It was a two-day, several-hour hike because you lived in the city and the camp was isolated from there, as that's where most of those monsters were found.
You left with very little, just a single bag with things belonging to both of you, which you took turns carrying.
Things got complicated on the last day of the hike, when they could already see the main roof of the camp. The whole path was silent, and you only looked at each other when you tried to grab your backpack and he wouldn't let you out of chivalry, until you saw one of those creatures standing less than 10 meters away from you.
You two just exchanged a terrified look and ran off into the forest.
Let's summarize? He fell. As if that wasn't enough, he fell and rolled away.
You noticed and got angry because he wasn't doing anything right.
