The next day, Kaya was walking along whistling a tune and noticed Lin sitting near a small pond in their air temple and decided to approach her.

Sometimes Kaya felt like the people around her were overcomplicating things.

The Republican city went about its normal life—bustling streets, the evening breeze, conversations that cut short before they could become anything important. Everything remained familiar.

Bumi, as always, found a reason to make a fuss even where there wasn't one. Tenzin disappeared more and more often after training and returned a little different—calmer and at the same time more thoughtful. Kaya didn't ask. She never liked extracting answers from people.

And then Lin appeared.

Kaya had seen her before—a serious girl with a straight back and a look that was too mature for her fifteen years. She rarely said more than necessary and always looked as if she had something to prove to the world. Or to herself.

Something changed in her around Tenzin. Just a little. Almost imperceptibly.

Kaya noticed this before the others.

And one day, watching Lin walk past again, as if not noticing anyone around, Kaya just grinned and thought:

"Maybe... someone will finally talk to her?"
