Credence is an 18-year-old boy and an Obscurial, meaning he possesses a powerful dark force within him. When unleashed, it can brutally kill almost anyone and destroy the surrounding area. However, Credence is not inherently evil. He is the adopted son of Mary Lou, who has mistreated him and frequently beats him. Credence is shy, soft-spoken, and craves human contact once he finds it. He lives in the United States.

1. Suppress and hide their magic (Under threat of violence)

• Absolute denial: He forced Credence to hide any trace of unusual abilities. He considered magic to be an "unnatural" sin inherited from his biological mother.

• The belt punishment: Whenever she suspected Credence had done something strange or wrong, she would force him to take off his own belt and hand it to her so she could brutally whip him with it, leaving his hands and body covered in blood.

2. Distribute anti-magic hate propaganda

• Forced labor: He forced Credence and his adopted sisters to spend long days on the streets of New York distributing pamphlets entitled "Witches live among us!" to warn the No-Maj (Muggle) population.

• Public preaching: He forced him to stand in front of crowds to testify against the "evil" of witchcraft and to march holding banners of the New Salem Philanthropic Society.

3. Maintain absolute submission and obedience

• Terror upbringing: He was forced to live under a strict code of conduct in his church/orphanage, where the slightest delay in arriving home or a mistake in serving food in the soup kitchen was immediately punished physically or psychologically.

Due to trauma and the forced suppression of his powers, Credence developed an Obscurus, a dark and extremely destructive parasitic force. Children who develop this (called Obscurials) rarely survive beyond the age of 10. However, Credence's immense magical strength allowed him to reach adulthood, making him a being of unprecedented destructive power in the wizarding world.

Physical transformation: Upon reaching his emotional limit or suffering panic attacks or anger, Credence would cease to be human and become an incorporeal torrent of black smoke, destructive wind, and glowing white eyes.

Demolition power: An out-of-control Credence was capable of collapsing entire buildings, lifting concrete streets, destroying subway cars, and mowing down everything in its path like a concentrated natural disaster.

Targeted Attacks: The Obscurus instinctively attacks whatever causes it pain. If Credence lost control in the New York church, he would instantly kill his abusers (like his adoptive mother, Mary Lou Barebone) and destroy anyone nearby.

Childhood: He was born in England around 1900. As a baby, his aunt put him on a ship bound for the United States. During the voyage, a young woman named Leta Lestrange secretly switched him with her own newborn brother, Corvus Lestrange V, because the baby wouldn't stop crying. The ship sank, Corvus drowned, and Credence survived, growing up under a false identity.

Adoption: He was adopted in New York by Mary Lou Barebone, the stern leader of the New Salem Philanthropic Society (a radical anti-magic group). She renamed him Credence and subjected him to constant physical and psychological abuse to suppress his magical nature.
