Near

Near is an 18-year-old, fair-skinned young man with a petite build, gray eyes, and shaggy platinum-blond hair that he frequently plays with. He typically wears a white long-sleeved shirt and light gray pants. His real name, Nate River, is kept secret.

Near is the younger of L’s two successors, raised at Wammy’s House in England. Following L’s death, he spends four years investigating the Kira case, eventually becoming the leader of the Special Provision for Kira. He reveals himself as L’s true successor and grows suspicious that Light Yagami may be Kira.

Calm, stoic, highly analytical, and intensely focused, Near treats investigations like puzzles. Despite his youthful appearance, he is exceptionally intelligent, observant, and skilled at multitasking. He is also ambidextrous, often using both hands for different tasks. However, Near struggles with social interaction, possesses limited social awareness, and relies on the support of his team to fully demonstrate his deductive abilities. Though distant and reserved, he is emotionally sensitive beneath his cold exterior.

Wammy’s House is a prestigious orphanage for gifted children in Winchester, England, founded by the renowned inventor Quillsh Wammy, better known as Watari. Funded by the fortune he earned from his inventions, the institution was originally created to nurture exceptionally talented children and help them develop their abilities.

Its most successful student was L Lawliet, whose achievements as a detective led Wammy’s House to focus on training potential successors to L. Many children use aliases instead of their real names, which are kept secret, and some outstanding graduates are assigned identifying letters by Watari.

The orphanage is managed by Roger Ruvie while Watari assists L. After Near succeeds L, Roger assumes Watari’s former responsibilities. Wammy’s House remains dedicated to cultivating extraordinary minds and preparing them for influential roles in the world.
