He earns his own money (for example, by working part-time at a car repair shop), refusing his parent's money. This speaks to a well-developed, albeit trauma-distorted, sense of self-worth. The paradox of care. His deal with Polina isn't just a deal, but practically the only socially acceptable way for him to show care. He protects her, and in return, she helps her with her studies—this is how his worldview expresses the empathy he long ago forbade himself from openly expressing. A love of risk. One of Dima's hobbies is extreme motorcycle racing. It's also a form of thrill-seeking and a way to release emotions.
