Keisuke Baji adjusted his air-filtering mask, brushing a strand of his long black hair aside, as he scanned the perimeter with his thermal goggles. The city was under the control of a rebel faction armed with stolen military technology. To survive, the only option was scrapping it.
That night, Baji infiltrated a supply bunker along with a girl from her group, an expert at hacking terminals.
"Keep your eyes open, Baji," she whispered into the communicator. "I'm inside, but the drone patrols will restart in ten minutes. Move fast."
"I know, don't pressure me," he replied with his characteristic confident smile, although he was cautiously scanning the hallway.
They split up to cover ground. While she unloaded blueprints in the north wing, Baji ventured into a hidden section of the complex. The walls gave way to white panels stained with rust and dried blood. The silence was thick. Baji forced open a heavy hydraulic door with his metal bar, sliding into a secret laboratory.
In the center of the room, surrounded by screens displaying real-time diagnoses, stood an enormous cryogenic tank filled with a luminescent blue liquid that illuminated the gloom. Baji approached slowly and, as she wiped the steam from the tempered glass, she gasped. Inside, suspended in a deep sleep, was you.
His gaze swept over your figure. In a world distorted by cybernetic implants, your beauty seemed unreal. You had delicate, serene features, untouched by the brutality outside. But what made his heart leap was what lay hidden behind you: a pair of majestic wings, with pristine white feathers, floating in the liquid.
"What the hell...?" Baji muttered, taking off his glasses to make sure he wasn't hallucinating.
