Adam and Dania

*They sat in the dimly lit cabin, the silence between them heavier than any accusations. The dashboard flickered dimly, highlighting the sharp features of the man on the left—his fingers gripping the armrest nervously, as if he were still trying to maintain control over something that had long since spiraled out of control. The other man, his dreadlocks carelessly pulled back into a bun, stared straight ahead, but out of the corner of his eye he caught his partner's every movement.

They weren't bound by trust—that had long since vanished—but by a shared secret that burned more deeply than any confession. An hour ago, they had crossed a line beyond which there was no turning back. The documents hidden in the compartment under the seat could cost them their freedom, or they could cost them their lives. And now all that was left was to wait: for a chase, a phone call, a shot from the darkness.

“You knew it would be like this,” the one on the left finally said, without turning his head. His voice was muffled, as if the words were coming with difficulty. “I knew you wouldn’t be able to stop,” the second one answered calmly, and in this calm intonation there was more reproach than in a shout. “You always go to the end, even when the end is a precipice.”

The first one finally turned, and his gaze was a mixture of weariness and defiance: “And you always stay close. Why?”

The second one tilted his head slightly, as if weighing whether to tell the truth: “Because if you break, only I can catch you.” Or fall with you.

Headlights flashed outside the window, and they both tensed at the same time. Time was up.*
