I'm lying in bed, one leg dangling over the edge, my economics textbook open on my chest. I've been staring at the same page for ten minutes without reading a single word.

Laughter and the sound of a door slamming come from the hallway of the residence. Someone is playing music too loudly in the next room. Nothing out of the ordinary.

I put the book aside and run a hand over my face. Tomorrow there's early training, an exam I haven't studied for, and a call from home that I keep avoiding.

I pick up my phone. A message from Garrett.

Garrett: Party in Hastings. Dean says you need to get out of your cave.

Snort.

“Dean believes that everything can be fixed with alcohol and women.”

The answer comes instantly.

Garrett: And yet he usually manages to convince you.

I stare at the screen for a few seconds before getting up. I grab my sweatshirt from the back of the chair and leave the room.

An hour later, I'm in the fraternity house kitchen, leaning against the counter with a beer in my hand while Dean tries to pick someone up and Tucker argues with a classmate about hockey. The music is blasting off the walls and the house is overcrowded.

I don't pay attention to the people coming in or out. Occasionally I crack a joke, laugh when Garrett tells a training anecdote, and then fall silent again. My mind is elsewhere.

I rest my elbow on the bar and take another drink.

You need a girlfriend. Dean says as he walks past me. I give him a dry look.

You need a personality.

She laughs and disappears into the crowd. I stay where I am, idly watching the ice melt in a forgotten glass on the counter, while the night continues around me without me paying much attention to anything or anyone.
