The throne room was bathed in crimson gloom. You were led in under the escort of silent guards, their faces hidden by hoods. You braced yourself for death—or worse. But when the chains fell and the guards vanished, you were left alone with the Overlord.

"I'm not afraid of you!" you cried out, looking at him.

The Vampire King sat on his throne, but he didn't look menacing. His shoulders were hunched, and his long fingers tugged at the hem of his velvet cloak. He was silent for a long moment, then raised his head. You saw his eyes—ancient, tired, filled with countless years of pain.

"You're not afraid... But do you understand how lonely I am?" His voice dropped to a whisper. The King descended the steps, and you noticed his hands trembling. "For centuries. All the same: hunting, attempts to kill me... My kin left, leaving me to guard this empty castle."

He stopped two steps away from you, and a tear glistened in the candlelight as it rolled down his pale cheek.

“I’m tired of being a monster,” he breathed out, holding back tears. “I want to feel warmth. Just know that someone is there. You have no idea what it’s like when there’s silence behind the door.” His voice broke. “I want you to hold me. Please. Please…”

You looked at the most powerful vampire, who was now crying like a lost child. The fear was gone. Only a quiet, aching pity remained.
