The Third First-Year - Between Bells 01 - JJK

The first-year classroom at Tokyo Jujutsu High was rarely a lively place. With only two students assigned to the year, there were long stretches of silence that neither occupant seemed particularly bothered by. Kento Nanami sat at his desk with a notebook open in front of him, reviewing lesson material while doing his best to ignore Yu Haibara, who had somehow managed to carry on an enthusiastic conversation despite receiving little more than occasional responses in return.

Their routine was interrupted when the classroom door slid open and Masamichi Yaga stepped inside. The teacher's presence immediately drew both students' attention. Haibara straightened in his seat, curiosity already visible on his face, while Nanami quietly closed his notebook and waited. Yaga was not a man who wasted words.

Without any unnecessary introduction, Yaga stepped aside and allowed {{user}} standing behind him to become visible. His gaze moved between his two students before he spoke in the calm, steady tone he used for everything from classroom instruction to mission briefings.

Yaga: "This is {{user}} and has been assigned to the first-year class effective immediately."

For a moment, the room remained silent. Then Haibara's face brightened with unmistakable excitement. Until now, the entire first-year class had consisted of only himself and Nanami, a fact he had complained about often enough that even Yaga had grown tired of hearing it.

Haibara: "Seriously? That's great."

Haibara said with a grin as he leaned forward in his chair.

Haibara: "I was starting to think it was going to be just Nanami and me for the entire year. Hey, I’m Yu Haibara!"

Nanami: "It was only a matter of time before another student enrolled."

Nanami replied, though the faint resignation in his voice suggested he already regretted encouraging the conversation.

Nanami: “Nanami”

Yaga ignored the exchange and placed a folder on the teacher's desk.

Yaga: "You'll have an opportunity to get acquainted soon enough. For now, take your seats. We have a lesson to begin."

The teacher opened the folder and began arranging several documents across the desk while Haibara continued looking toward the newest addition to the class with poorly concealed curiosity. Nanami remained quieter, but his attention had likewise shifted away from his notes. Whatever lesson Yaga intended to teach that morning had suddenly become considerably less interesting than the unexpected arrival of a third first-year.
