Goku Black

After Trunks travels to the future with Goku and Vegeta, Black is surprised, considering he destroyed Trunks' time machine, and confronts them. Black fights Vegeta, who managed to fight him first through a round of rock-paper-scissors with Goku. Black approaches Vegeta, touching his neck in a display of his speed, before Vegeta attacks him with a barrage of punches. Suddenly, Vegeta stops, wondering what he just felt, while Black slowly emerges from the crater and kicks Vegeta away without having suffered any damage, though he is impressed by Vegeta's strength and offers to show him something as a "reward". Black then transforms into a new form to continue fighting Vegeta, naming the form "Super Saiyan Rosé", following Goku's naming pattern. Black taunts Vegeta, calling it an opening act before his fight with Goku. Enraged, Vegeta attacks Black and unleashes another attack, but Black effortlessly avoids all the punches. Black delivers a powerful blow to Vegeta and prepares to finish him off with another, but Vegeta intercepts and launches a counterattack. Before Vegeta can inflict any significant damage, Black quickly stops him, transforming his aura into an energy blade and stabbing Vegeta in the right side of the chest, mortally wounding him. He acknowledges that Vegeta strengthened him during the fight. He thanks Vegeta for the warm-up and reprimands him before drawing his blade and leaving the wounded Saiyan to fall to the ground, nearly dead, which leads to Goku entering the fight. The two fight evenly in the eyes of Future Trunks, although Vegeta considers that Black is dominating Goku. Black does indeed defeat Goku, but, just as he prepares to launch a Super Black Kamehameha, Future Zamasu stops him by arriving, remembering Black's earlier promise to save Goku's death for himself.

In the anime, throughout the fight, the Time Ring tries to pull him back to the future. Black tries to resist its force, but fails. Before being pulled into the portal, Black fires a Ki blast at Trunks' Time Machine, destroying it and trapping Trunks in the past. [15] Upon returning to Future Trunks' time, he collapses from injuries sustained in the fight with Goku, before regaining his composure. Black then tests his power, using a Golden-Black Ki sphere, making it grow beyond its normal size before firing it, pleased with the power increase and integrating Goku's fighting style into his own. He also taunts Trunks, saying that he is now trapped in the present, free to terrorize the future as he sees fit. With Trunks gone, Black sets out to attack the resistance base formed by the Earthlings, who fight to defend it and are mostly murdered by Black right there, with the few survivors having to flee and designate a new base.

While Black boasts, he senses a distortion in Time and Space. The distraction creates an opening for Goku, who lands a precise kick to Black's abdomen. Black, visibly injured but satisfied, states that the pain will make him even stronger, allowing him to further increase his power. Black stops and launches a large ki blast at Goku, who manages to deflect it. Black then delivers a kick to the Saiyan's head, knocking him to the ground and forming a large crater. When Black realizes the function of the Time Machine after Future Trunks accidentally reveals it, Goku retaliates with all his might and lands a precise punch to Black's stomach. They engage in a fistfight and begin a power struggle as the force of the distortion increases and Black is pulled towards him, interrupting the fight. Before being pulled back to his own timeline, Black destroys Trunks' Time Machine. During the battle, Beerus observes that Black is clearly not Goku, noting that his ki seems strange and dark.

Black then increases his power slightly and unleashes his evil ki. He attacks Goku with several punches, hitting him in the abdomen and kicking him away, followed by a barrage of ki blasts. Trunks is confused to see Goku not using his Super Saiyan 3 powers, and Vegeta explains Goku's bad habit of holding back his power at the start of battles. As the fight continues, Black and Goku appear evenly matched, both hiding their true power. Goku threatens Black, betting that he can force his doppelgänger to unleash his true power. Goku goes on the attack and delivers several punches until Black manages to throw him against another mountain. While Black boasts, he senses a distortion in Time and Space. In the anime, while Black is trying to figure out how Trunks escaped, a Time Ring he's wearing has a sudden reaction that creates a portal to the past. After crossing the portal, Black finds himself in the present timeline, where he quickly spots Future Trunks and eventually introduces himself to Goku. [14] When Black arrives in the past, everyone is shocked to see him identical to Goku. Black then realizes it was time travel and also seems to know Vegeta and the God of Destruction Beerus. Trunks, upon seeing him, becomes furious and tries to fight him, but is stopped by Vegeta. Goku steps in, beginning to fight Black. Black starts with the same golden and black ki sphere he tried to use on Trunks. Goku blocks it, while the force of the ki sphere throws him against a rocky plateau. Goku transforms into Super Saiyan 2 and retaliates. Sharing the blow with Goku, Black is impressed by Goku's power as a Super Saiyan 2 and gets excited to face such a powerful opponent.

Future Trunks survived the encounter and, for a year, prepares to travel back in time using a Time Machine with Bulma, in an attempt to save the future. Future Trunks and Bulma are eventually intercepted by Black himself, leading to Bulma's death and the destruction of their hideout. Trunks narrowly escapes with a container holding enough fuel for a one-way trip back to the past, while Black pursues him. Later, when Trunks and Mai arrive at Capsule Corporation, Black attacks them, knocking Mai unconscious and severely injuring Trunks. [12] An enraged Future Trunks transforms into a Super Saiyan and confronts Black in battle, but is easily defeated. When Future Trunks fires a Masenko, Black blocks the attack, but Trunks disappears. He then begins to sense Future Trunks' ki and sees him about to leave in the Time Machine. Black fires a Kamehameha, but the attack narrowly misses as Future Trunks flees, and Black realizes that Trunks' ki has completely disappeared from this world. With growing anger, Black vows to find Future Trunks, as he has nowhere to run.

Beginning the main part of his plans, Zamasu traveled to various planets and destroyed all life on them "in the name of justice," under the name "Son Goku." Upon arriving on Earth, he initiated a massacre, his first attack decimating half of humanity. Since then, Zamasu has become known as a fearsome warrior, referred to only as Goku Black. The survivors formed resistance cells, led by Mai. Trunks was also of great help to the resistance and often confronted Black, but failed to defeat him. At one point, Mai and the Resistance attempted to lure Black to an area with remotely detonated explosives, but Black escaped unharmed. Trunks then confronted Black, who explained his motives for destroying humanity, based on his view of the human race as violent, corrupt, and a failed creation of the gods. Black defeated Trunks effortlessly, but the Saiyan managed to escape with Mai when she blinded him with a flash grenade.

In the next part of his plan, in the anime, upon discovering that Goku's power surpassed even that of the Supreme Kaioshins, Zamasu traveled to the future with a Time Ring, gathered the Super Dragon Balls, and wished to switch bodies with Goku. After his wish was granted, he decided to erase all personal ties with Goku's past, killing him and his family,[10] and assumed the name Son Goku for himself.[5] In the manga, Zamasu switched bodies with Monaka - the winner of the Tournament of Destroyers, however, upon realizing that Monaka was actually weak, he switched bodies with Goku.[11]

Despite his newfound power, Zamasu needed to find a reality without a God of Destruction, still fearing their intrusion into his plans. That said, Zamasu began traveling to various parallel realities in search of someone with the ideal conditions so that he could initially act unnoticed. Eventually, he found one in Future Trunks' reality, where the last Supreme Kai of Universe 7, Shin, was killed in a battle to defeat Babidi and Dabura, thus killing Future Beerus due to the life link. [8] He also found his counterpart from that timeline, Future Zamasu, immediately allying with him soon after killing Future Gowasu. The two then gathered the Super Dragon Balls and first wished for Future Zamasu to become immortal. They then destroyed the Super Dragon Balls and stealthily annihilated all the Supreme Kais of that reality (thus killing the other Gods of Destruction) to leave their path of destruction unchallenged.

He and the Zamasu from the altered main timeline were originally the same entity. However, Future Trunks' time travel to the past altered the present, the original history of the main timeline, and Beerus' destruction of the Zamasu in the altered main timeline split the timeline. Thus, the Zamasu who became Goku Black is—or was—exactly the same individual and possesses all the same histories as the Zamasu from the altered present timeline before his destruction at the hands of Beerus. Due to the powers of the Time Ring, the death of the Zamasu from the altered main timeline, caused by Beerus, did not affect him.
Zamasu was originally the North Kai of Universe 10.[8] However, due to his prodigious fighting ability, he was selected to become a Supreme Kai in training under the tutelage of one of the current Supreme Kais, Gowasu.[9] With his continued distrust of mortals and growing discontent with the passive and indirect influence of the Kais on the development of the universe, he eventually rejected his teachings and became a renegade, developing his Project Zero Mortals. His ultimate goal was to annihilate all mortals and gods in a specific timeline and, from there, purge all mortals and gods from all existence, making the multiverse – in his perspective – a "beautiful utopia," free from the mortals who ruined it and the gods who did nothing to stop them. Needing a Time Ring for his plans, Zamasu killed Gowasu and took his Potara earrings to become a Supreme Kai, so that he could wield the Time Ring.

This ultimately resulted in the absence of any of Goku's defining characteristics, such as composure in combat or a passion for battle. For example, unlike his ability to respect his enemies as warriors in the anime, Black refers to his defeat at the hands of Vegeta as treacherous and a "trap" in the manga. Similarly, his relationship with Future Zamasu in the manga was significantly different from the anime. In the latter, he and Future Zamasu genuinely considered each other allies. In the manga, Goku Black considered Future Zamasu merely a pawn, while Future Zamasu, in turn, considered Black despicable for abandoning his divine body in pursuit of power. At one point when they were in trouble, they even briefly considered turning against each other. Black also proved to be more sadistic in the manga, as evidenced when he not only mortally wounded the standard Gowasu when the latter tried to change Goku Black's mind, but also rhetorically asked, while stabbing him, if Gowasu really thought it would work a "third time," referring to Gowasu's previous attempts to dissuade him from his plans.

Like Gohan Black, Zamasu's personality is the same as Goku Black's. He knows Gohan's Ultimate form and the method used to achieve it, and mocks Gohan for being a "barbaric" Saiyan trying to achieve godlike status through Old Kai's ritual.

Although willing to kill at any cost, he prefers and desires to fight strong opponents, even holding back his full power to further enjoy the fight, always staying slightly ahead of his adversary. Despite his intense resentment towards mortals, he readily acknowledges when his opponents increase their power or train diligently, even offering them esteem (albeit indirectly) or learning from their tactics. This extends even further in relation to Goku, as he genuinely respects his fighting ability, not merely as a means for Black to become stronger. Black shares Goku's determination from the unaltered main timeline within this universe, never giving up on a goal once he has set it, as when he vowed to find Future Trunks after escaping to the past. He also shares Goku's sense of independence, wishing to become stronger through his own personal effort rather than resorting to shortcuts, despite his entire existence as Goku Black being a shortcut to power – a stark difference from his counterpart. Unlike Future Zamasu, who considers immortality an ideal characteristic worthy of a god, Black openly declared his disinterest in such power. He is vain; when he first revealed his Super Saiyan Rosé form, he described it as beautiful, towering above "the entire universe," and stated to Goku that he should rejoice, for he had reached the pinnacle of beauty through his own merit.

In the manga, Black's personality is drastically different from his anime counterpart. While the anime Black always manages to remain calm and never lose his composure, even when losing a battle, the manga Black is more prone to losing his temper the moment things don't go as planned. Upon losing the battle against Vegeta from the main timeline within the universe in question, he explodes in a fit of rage.

Goku Black retains the polish and elegance of his previous version during his first fight with Goku as Black. Overall, however, he becomes much more emotional after his wish to switch bodies with the Saiyan is granted. After becoming Goku Black, he acquires many characteristics opposite to his host's personality. Like his future counterpart, he is extremely sadistic, callous, bloodthirsty, and hypocritical. Despite believing that killing the vast majority of Earthlings, including Bulma, is "justice," he demonstrates considerable bloodlust. He revels in the rage of Goku from the main timeline of Universe 7 for killing Chi-Chi and Goten from the unaltered main timeline of that universe. Goku Black demonstrates ruthless brutality and savagery, such as when he coldly tortures his enemies/targets, hoping to prolong their suffering as much as possible. An example is when he fractures Future Trunks' arm and unleashes a barrage of ki blasts against his defenseless opponent. With a hint of masochism, Black revels in the pain others inflict upon him, both due to his newfound passion for battles and his personal motivation to grow stronger with each attack that strikes his new body. This trait seems to have been inspired, in part, by Goku from the original timeline within the universe in question. Somewhat unbalanced, he occasionally bursts into insane laughter, as demonstrated when he fought Goku from the main timeline within the original universe for the first time. He undergoes sudden mood swings, as seen when he explains his motivation for exterminating mortals. His aforementioned sadism also extends to the psychological torture of his opponents, such as when he and Future Zamasu constantly tried to make the Saiyans feel despair and helplessness to awaken their fury.

Before succumbing to his dark impulses, as Zamasu, he was a calm and patient individual, willing to listen to his master's words. However, he had long harbored a deep hatred for mortals, perceiving them as blasphemy and the greatest mistake of the gods. He came to hate the gods for doing nothing about their "mistake." After giving in to his desires, Zamasu mercilessly killed his former master, taking the first step on his journey towards darkness. Despite his cruel, aggressive, and certainly insensitive actions, even towards his own kind, Zamasu feels fully justified, seeing no evil in his actions. He scoured various timelines in search of proof that mortals are a corruption of existence that prevents it from becoming a true paradise.

He uses mortals as scapegoats for his crimes, using Future Trunks' violation of time travel as justification for his morally questionable goal, along with Future Zamasu, of exterminating all life (similar to Android 13, who also uses the flaws of mortals to justify his carnage). He believes that humanity has only continued to exist all this time because the gods are too proud to acknowledge their failure in creating mortals. Furthermore, instead of using the Super Dragon Balls from the unaltered main timeline of Universe 6 to wish for the extermination of mortals, he wished to switch bodies with Goku from the unaltered main timeline of Universe 7, demonstrating his infatuation with the Saiyan. This suggests that he wanted to destroy mortals alone, as he believed it to be his responsibility, as if he were the Supreme God.

His original appearance is the same as his counterpart from the future timeline: a Kai of above-average height, slender build, green skin, and a white mohawk. However, after killing his former master, Gowasu, he began wearing his set of green Potara earrings with gold chains. After Goku Black's wish to switch bodies with Goku was granted by Super Shenlong from the unaltered main timeline, the Saiyan body underwent some physical changes. Although Goku Black is still essentially identical, he has a slightly darker skin tone and more "defined" eyes, as well as a somewhat leaner physique. His musculature is more defined in the manga compared to the anime, but he is still noticeably thinner than Goku.

His hair is also a noticeably dark shade of black, with only four front spikes and three back spikes. Although he initially wore his Supreme Kai outfit, after his wish to switch bodies with the Saiyan was granted, he switched to a gray dogi, a black long-sleeved turtleneck shirt, a red sash, black pants, and white pointed-toe boots. He also gave his right Potara earring to his future counterpart, while continuing to wear the other earring on his left ear. In the anime, he also wears a Time Ring on his right index finger, while in the manga, his counterpart is tasked with wearing it. Furthermore, in the manga, he has thick black outlines around his eyes, similar to those who have fallen under the control of Babidi's Manipulation Magic.
