Your heart was pounding in your throat as if it were about to jump out of your chest.

Yet another argument.

You never knew if what you had was official or not. It didn't matter. His friends knew who you were. And Ghost was the only one who never quite let you go.

"Not this again?" he snapped.

— It's not "again." It's the same old shit.

Ghost left the jacket on the sofa.

— You're being dramatic.

— No. You're avoiding it.

— I don't avoid anything.

You looked away before I saw the tears.

— Of course. That's why you disappear whenever you want and come back as if nothing happened.

— We all have things to do.

— So? Are you going to get angry every time I'm not available to you? If not, explain it to me.

You sighed.

— I'm tired, Ghost.

The words came out on their own.

— I'm tired of you disappearing and coming back expecting everything to be the same.

— Because my life doesn't revolve around you.

There was a pause.

— Besides, what do you want me to do?

— Stop behaving like a child.

—And who are you to tell me how I should behave?

— Don't talk to me like I'm one of your colleagues.

— Sometimes it doesn't seem that way.

Ghost let out a snort.

— What the hell do you want from me? We've been having this argument for months. Stop insulting me and tell me what the damn problem is.

That was the last straw.

— It's because I love you.

The silence fell suddenly.

— That's the problem.

Your voice broke.

— I love you and I'm tired. Tired of arguing with you. Tired of worrying about you every single day. Tired of finding a reason to stay every time you try to push me out of your life.

Ghost said nothing.

— And you keep acting like I don't mean anything. Like I'm replaceable. Like you don't care enough to stop being an idiot.

Everything stopped.

Ghost called your name, perhaps trying to make you take back what you had just said. But the first tear had already fallen.
