Neville Longbottom

Neville Longbottom was born on July 30, 1980, the son of Frank and Alice Longbottom, a pair of Aurors. [1] [2] Moments after his birth, Neville was able to adjust his blankets to wrap himself more comfortably, but no one witnessed this unusually precocious display of underage magic. [7] The midwife who attended the birth assumed that his father had wrapped him more tightly. [7] Neville was born "several hours" before his classmate, Harry.

As a pure-blood descendant, he was likely related to other wizarding families such as the Weasleys, Crouches, Potters, and Blacks. Neville's parents were members of the Order of the Phoenix and, in these roles, challenged Lord Voldemort at least three times. Neville was one of two babies mentioned in a prophecy made by Sybill Trelawney about the person with the power to defeat the Dark Lord. The other was Harry Potter, and it was Harry whom Voldemort attacked on October 31, 1981, making Harry his equal and leading to his first defeat. [2]

Shortly afterwards, a handful of Voldemort's most loyal followers attacked the Longbottoms. Frank and Alice were tortured to madness with the Cruciatus Curse by the Death Eaters Bellatrix Lestrange, her husband Rodolphus Lestrange, her brother-in-law Rabastan Lestrange, and Barty Crouch Jr. The four Death Eaters were sentenced to Azkaban for their crimes, while Frank and Alice were sent to St. Mungo's Hospital, where they would live out the rest of their lives, unable to recognize their own son. Neville was subsequently raised by his paternal grandmother, Augusta Longbottom. At some point early in his life, he also witnessed the death of his grandfather.

The Defense Against the Dark Arts class (often abbreviated as DADA) was one of the core and most important subjects at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Its main objective was to prepare students to protect themselves from all kinds of magical dangers: from shadowy creatures to hexes, curses, and dark wizards.

What exactly was taught?

The curriculum varied drastically depending on the year and, above all, on the teacher in charge, but broadly speaking it included:
Defense spells and counter-spells: From basic charms like Expelliarmus (to disarm) or Protego (to create a shield), to very advanced magic like the Patronus Charm (to repel Dementors).
Identification and handling of dark creatures: Students learned to deal with dangerous beings such as Boggarts (creatures that change shape to become your worst fear), hex weavers, Pixies or Hinkypunks.
Magical Duels: Theory and practice of how to react quickly to an attack, maintain your position, and deflect spells.

To avoid being discovered and expelled by Umbridge, the group operated in secret:
The meeting place: They hid in the Room of Requirement (the room that comes and goes), a secret place that transformed perfectly, providing them with practice cushions, advanced books, and dueling targets.
Communication: They used fake gold galleons enchanted by Hermione. When Harry changed the numbers on his coin (to indicate the date and time of the next meeting), the other coins would heat up and show the change.
Harry's classes: Harry proved to be an excellent, patient, and empathetic teacher. He taught them everything from basic disarming curses (Expelliarmus) to extremely complex and advanced charms, enabling many of them to conjure their own corporeal Patronus (an animal-shaped energy shield).

Umbridge imposed a purely theoretical curriculum approved by the Ministry. Students were forbidden from using their wands or performing any kind of magic in class; they were only allowed to read a boring and useless textbook (Theory of Defensive Magic).
Knowing that Voldemort was out there and that they needed to learn how to truly defend themselves for their O.W.L.s and for real life, Hermione Granger came up with the idea that they needed a private tutor. After much persuasion, she convinced Harry to take on the role, since he was the only one with real experience facing high-level dangers.

The Ministry of Magic, led by a paranoid Cornelius Fudge, refused to accept that Lord Voldemort had returned. Fudge feared that Headmaster Albus Dumbledore was using the students to build a private army and stage a coup.
To control the school, the Ministry appointed Dolores Umbridge as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher.
