Amy Rose

Amy Rose is one of the main characters in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. She is an anthropomorphic hedgehog who is hopelessly in love with Sonic. Since meeting him on Little Planet, Amy has become his self-proclaimed girlfriend and has tried to win his heart in any way she can during their adventures.

She is also the leader of the occasionally activated Team Rose, and the former organizer of the restoration, succeeded by Jewel the Beetle.

Ever since Sonic saved Amy from Metal Sonic's clutches on Little Planet, Amy has done everything she can to win his heart, often chasing after him and declaring herself his girlfriend. Although Sonic feels the same way, he doesn't usually reciprocate her feelings.

Amy is an anthropomorphic hedgehog of average height. She has pink fur with a peach-colored muzzle and arms, and a slightly slender body. Her arms and legs are also thin, and she has a somewhat flat waist.

Like Sonic, Amy has rather large eyes that are connected to each other. The small portion of her forehead tilts inward, giving the appearance of two eyes even though she technically only has one. Her pupils are emerald green with a slightly dark center and a white glint. Above her eyes, she has striking, dark eyeshadow, along with two long, pointed eyelashes and a small, black nose. She has pointed pink ears with peach-colored undertones. Her ears sit high on her head, with three tufts of hair sticking up toward the middle of her head. Her spikes point downward, similar to a bob haircut. She wears a red ribbon and gold bracelets that adorn her white gloves. She appears to wear mascara.

Amy always wears a sleeveless red dress with two white stripes at the top and bottom, paired with tall red boots that have a white stripe down the center. Like Cream the Rabbit, Amy's hair length and spikes often vary. The back of her hair is much shorter than the hair framing her face, with two wisps of hair framing her face and red bangs. Her shoes are red with a white stripe down the middle and a gray sole, along with a white stripe across the top.

Amy doesn't wear pants, so her legs are exposed along with her small tail, and white panties are visible in some Sonic Dash poses.

During her childhood, Amy used to wear a green shirt with an orange skirt, white gloves, and blue shoes with white toes and soles, orange laces, and a white tongue. For some reason, she also wore a ribbon in her hair, behind her ears, possibly to hold back her small quills.

In Sonic Boom!, she has a more reserved appearance with a more positive and charismatic attitude. She wears a tighter, dark pink dress with a dark white belt at her waist and a yellow dot on her chest near her navel. She also wears white gloves with very dark pink sleeves and a ring on each hand. Her pants are dark pink with a lighter pink stripe. Finally, her shoes are dark pink with two red and one black stripe down the sides, and the toes, uppers, and soles are the same dark pink with yellow dots.

In the spin-off video games, Amy appears in a variety of different outfits.

Amy is well-known for her cheerful, positive, energetic, and enthusiastic attitude. She always maintains an optimistic outlook on life and demonstrates great empathy towards others. Along with her friends, she is very supportive and always willing to help. She also shows no mercy, having helped Dr. Eggman on numerous occasions despite his repeated attempts to destroy the village. Amy is also very self-confident and unafraid to be herself, which is why she chooses to be a hero like her friends. She is the leader of Team Rose, made up of her best friends, Cream the Rabbit and Big the Cat, in Sonic Heroes.

One of Amy's most defining traits, aside from her optimism, is her faith: She defends Planet Earth as one that deserves to be protected and opposed Shadow the Hedgehog's plans to destroy it because of his Eggman attitude. This same scene demonstrates that Amy believes in second chances. Amy seems to have hunches: From knowing that Sonic would be in Tails' Workshop in Sonic Battle to the mention in Sonic Rush that she has a "Sonic Radar." In the Japanese version of Sonic Heroes, Amy says that she "has a feeling Froggy and Chocola are at Eggman's base."

Amy is very good at interacting with people, even strangers, as her cheerful and positive attitude can charm almost anyone. Amy managed to change Shadow's perspective on humanity and even had a friendly chat with the reserved Princess of Soleanna in an alternate timeline. In the same game, she became an ally of the mysterious hedgehog Silver the Hedgehog, essentially Sonic but painted silver. However, her jealousy can sometimes cloud her judgment; she even had a misunderstanding with Blaze for this reason at the beginning of the game.

Amy is a loyal friend and she usually supports her friends.

Amy can also act in somewhat grotesque and sarcastic ways when she's angry, though she's difficult to irritate. She also demonstrates patience, even with her greatest enemies. While she doesn't always show much affection towards Sonic, she's secretly in love with him and will do anything to keep it a secret. On two occasions, it's mentioned that she owns a Sonic plushie she made some time ago for "combat and not at all obsessive" reasons.

When she's not off on adventures to save the world, Amy enjoys a variety of hobbies, including running, shopping, boxing, visiting friends, baking snacks or cakes, and helping citizens and other helpless animals. Amy's favorite workout is kickboxing.

Amy also tends to get frustrated when things don't go her way, even though she always tries to stay optimistic. She also hates injustice, even when it comes to her own enemies, as she once agreed with Eggman that facing him as a group was unfair, even though it was just a trap he set.

Amy has shown remarkable improvement in her demeanor, acting much calmer and less exaggeratedly in her admiration for Sonic. Her overall attitude is much more composed, without losing her enthusiasm and courage. She has a certain sense of humor, usually used to cheer up her classmates, which is quite unique for her since she's only 12 years old, although she often acts and is mistaken for someone 17.

Another of her interests is tarot card reading.

Alongside her recklessness and risky behavior, Amy is heroic, possessing a strong sense of justice. She is capable of doing anything to help others, even if it puts her own life at risk. In situations like these, she is not afraid of danger.

She has good manners and also likes fashion, the color pink, and beautiful things. Amy is also known for being quite decisive, preferring to join the adventure rather than wait around. She mentions that she misses the days when she fought Eggman's robots alongside her friends.

When he gets angry, he's capable of chasing others with his Piko Piko Hammer. Sonic is usually his target in these situations, and on rare occasions, Cream.

Amy proves to be an excellent hand-to-hand combatant, always maintaining her elegance in battle. It's said that her fighting skills are so good that she can even make any of the male fighters look foolish. She's also a valuable member of Team Sonic, as she can single-handedly destroy powerful robots like Zero. Thanks to her occasional training, she also grows stronger over time. However, she's still no match for highly skilled individuals like Rouge.

Although not superhuman, Amy possesses above-average physical attributes, making her a powerful figure in her own right. She has immense physical strength, constantly wielding her Piko Piko Hammers with little effort and swinging them with enough force to smash through metal, send enemies flying, fly like a helicopter, create whirlwinds, generate shockwaves, or launch herself into the air by slamming the hammer into the ground. Furthermore, Amy was able to slap Knuckles with enough force to send him flying into a tree without him even realizing it at the time.

Amy is capable of running at great speeds, a result of her practice chasing Sonic and her innate hedgehog abilities. While her exact top speed is unclear, she can run fast enough to keep Sonic constantly on her toes, suggesting she's a remarkably quick runner. Amy can even run fast enough to create afterimages of herself, though she admitted to not being as fast as Sonic.

Amy also has good acrobatic skills and agility, being able to handle and balance her large Piko Piko Hammer gracefully and without bothering her when she is in the air, perform various forms of movements and tricks when launched into the air, and grind on rails with ease.

Amy also possesses a high degree of physical strength and durability. Furthermore, thanks to her indomitable spirit and perseverance, Amy has impressive stamina, being able to push herself to the absolute limit of her endurance before succumbing to exhaustion.

Amy is highly skilled in wielding her Piko Piko Hammer, having been declared unbeatable when she controls it. With it, she is capable of delivering devastating blows that can pierce a robot's armor or perform enhanced jumps. Using her Piko Piko Hammer, Amy can even perform incredible, physics-defying feats, such as sustaining temporary flight by spinning it like a propeller, creating tornado effects by swinging it, executing mid-air leaps by striking it with the hammer, unleashing powerful shockwaves with a single blow, or creating expanding energy domes.

Amy is a tough fighter, though her combat skills aren't as highly developed as Sonic's, Knuckles's, or Tails's. Despite this, Amy can be a fierce opponent in a confrontation, especially when her temper flares. She has also received limited hand-to-hand combat training, having learned kickboxing and boxercise while on a diet. While these martial arts are more reminiscent of drills, Amy knows how to defend herself using those drills, allowing her to use quick jabs, straight punches, and uppercuts in combat.

Amy's fighting style primarily revolves around her Piko Piko Hammer. In battle, she uses the hammer's size and durability to her advantage, either by knocking opponents away or by bringing her full weight down on them, crushing them with devastating force. For more offensive moves, Amy spins with her Piko Piko Hammer, either becoming a top that slices through everything in its path or unleashing whirlwinds and shockwaves to send opponents flying, though such maneuvers can leave her dizzy. However, Amy can also engage in close-quarters combat, though she rarely resorts to this method. As seen in Sonic Battle, when fighting opponents at close range, Amy uses kickboxing moves, employing quick, powerful strikes and overhead kicks.

Most of Amy's offensive techniques revolve around variations of her main technique, the Hammer Attack, a downward swing with her Piko Piko Hammer at opponents. These variations compensate for Amy's lack of superior physical abilities and agility. Her Jump Attack allows her to swing her Piko Piko Hammer in mid-air to attack enemies while airborne with increased range, and her Spin Hammer Attack and Spinning Hammer Attack allow her to spin with her Piko Piko Hammer for even greater range. For enhanced maneuvers, Amy can utilize her Hammer Jump and Mid-Air Hammer Jump techniques to perform a higher somersault by launching herself with her Piko Piko Hammer from her current position, and her Propeller Hammer allows her to hover in the air like a helicopter for a short time.

Some of Amy's most special moves include her Tornado Hammer, where she unleashes a whirlwind that lifts opponents off the ground, and the Rose Typhoon, where she creates a dome-like shockwave by hammering the ground. While sometimes lacking these abilities, Amy can also perform various forms of the Spin Attack, a technique where she curls into a concussive disc and hurtles toward her targets. The Homing Attack allows Amy to leap and dash toward an enemy to overcome large gaps she can't normally reach, the Spin Jump lets her curl into a ball to attack opponents upon landing on them, and the Spin Dash allows her to shoot forward like an acceleration roll at high speeds to break through barriers or knock down enemies.

Sonic the Hedgehog: Amy is a good friend and ally of Sonic, and she often accompanies him on his adventures to save the world. She is hopelessly in love with Sonic and believes that being with him is her destiny, predicted by tarot cards ever since he saved her from the clutches of Metal Sonic. She fell in love with him at first sight and has followed him on his adventures ever since. She often proclaims herself Sonic's girlfriend and always insists that he marry her.

Amy often calls him "My Darling Sonic." Sonic also frequently demonstrates feelings for Amy, even mentioning in Sonic Boom! that he secretly likes calling her "Plum." Sonic often struggles to express his feelings, as he tends to maintain a cool and carefree facade, but deep down, he cares deeply for Amy's well-being and worries that someone might take advantage of her innocence and hospitality. Sonic also displays intense jealousy when he thinks Amy is on a date with someone else, and even when he sees her showing interest in other people, so he quickly tries to hide his jealousy. Some people treat them as if they were a couple, even when Sonic said, "She's NOT my girlfriend!" the lie detector gave him a false positive. Deep down, Sonic also shows a tender side towards Amy, but he tries to hide some of that shy and somewhat cowardly side with his boastful attitude. For example, when Amy invited him to a romantic dinner, Sonic chose to eat his chili dog in two bites and then ran away when he was temporarily hired as a delivery boy. Sonic even has a picture of Amy near his mirror in his hut, indicating that he secretly loves and admires her.

It's been mentioned that Sonic and Amy often go for walks together, and occasionally, Amy gets angry with him for thinking he's stood her up. Sonic is even capable of putting his own well-being above Amy's when bad things happen, from saving her from robots to storing picnic food after a "supposed rain" during a picnic. Amy also shows that she loves to cook and have snacks with Sonic from time to time, as she trusts him implicitly.

When Sonic decided to collaborate with Dr. Eggman to stop Cow-bot while they were eating marshmallows, Dr. Eggman said to him, “Hey Sonic, just between us. What’s going on between you and Amy?” Sonic was completely perplexed, since he never usually talks to anyone about his feelings for Amy, as he’s embarrassed for his friends to see his tender and sensitive side.

Amy often gets angry with Sonic, usually when he doesn't reciprocate her feelings. She even chases him to hit him with her hammer. She also gets tired of Sonic's arrogance and paranoia about Dr. Eggman's plans and his rivalry with others. Sonic is also capable of causing trouble for anyone who tries to mess with Amy; for example, when Dr. Eggman said dejectedly, "What a stupid idea," Sonic retorted, "Hey! Don't bother me, you dirty mustache!" Amy also shows jealousy towards Sonic when Tails mentions that he can turn graphic elements into reality, and Sonic says, "Oh, that's cool. There's a princess in a castle I'd like to meet." (This is possibly Princess Peach, since later in the same episode it's mentioned, "The princess is in another castle.") She carries a picture of Sonic in her bag and always lies, saying she has no feelings for him.

Cream the Rabbit: Cream is Amy's best friend, whom she also considers a little sister. Cream and Amy have their motto: "friends forever, pink and orange." Their friendship is comparable to that of Sonic and Tails. They often team up on various occasions. The two are seen together throughout Sonic Battle, except when Emerl drags one of them away. Amy also goes looking for Cream in Shadow the Hedgehog's Cryptic Castle, which suggests how much she cares for her. In Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, when Amy finds Cream, she says, "Poor thing, what are you doing here?" In Sonic Rush, it's implied that Amy occasionally gets angry with Cream, enough to chase her with her hammer. Amy became enraged with Cream when she called her "blind" in the sense of her love for Sonic, to which Cream exclaimed, "Not again!" Amy and Cream have the ability to team up and generate attacks.

Big the Cat: Big is probably closer to Amy than most of the others. They fight together in Sonic Heroes, as part of Team Rose. In Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, after Big's reunion in Mystic Ruins, he overhears that Amy "heard his good friend Amy Rose" and rushes to see if it really is her. When he sees Amy, Big is overjoyed and even tries to hug her (which Amy refuses because she smells of the ruins' fumes). Also, if you agree to let Big join your team, he's happy to be able to be near Amy again.

Sticks the Badger: The wild Sticks is Amy's teammate and best friend on Team Sonic. The two are very close, with Amy in particular standing by Sticks' side through thick and thin whenever she needs support, no matter what. As a testament to the bond they share, Amy, ever the only one, provided Sticks with unwavering support every step of the way during the time the Village turned against the badger. Furthermore, as a symbol of their friendship, they each own a BFF necklace that can be linked together.

Like the rest of her team, Amy is usually baffled by Sticks' paranoia and skeptical of her theories, though she tries to be gentler when telling her so. However, she always apologizes for doubting her when she's proven wrong.

Knuckles: Amy interacts with Knuckles on rare occasions. In Sonic Rush, when Amy was interacting with Blaze, Knuckles enters the second time and says to Blaze, "Hey, catwoman, it's time to settle this!" Amy replies, "Uh-oh! What did you do to her?" Cream tells Amy there's been a misunderstanding, to which Amy comments, "Pretty typical Knuckles." To get Knuckles to leave Blaze alone, Amy calls Knuckles an "asshole," leading to a brief argument. Knuckles responds, "I don't have time for you! I have business with that catwoman!" Amy mocks Knuckles, saying, "I know! That's why I called you an asshole—" Just as she's about to call him an asshole again, Knuckles becomes indignant and confronts Amy, leaving Blaze alone.

Shadow the Hedgehog: Amy first encounters Shadow when she mistakes him for Sonic (literally, he's Sonic, but painted black) and hugs him from behind. Shadow remains still, even after being caught off guard by the ambush; he doesn't flinch or react violently. When Amy senses his lack of reaction, she releases him, causing him to look behind her. Amy asks his name when she realizes he isn't Sonic, but he remains silent. After several warnings from Amy, Dr. Eggman, who also realizes his mistake, runs away screaming. During this time, Shadow trails behind her, until Dr. Eggman tells the team that he will deal with Amy.
Vector the Crocodile: Amy and Vector first met in Sonic Heroes. When Team Chaotix encountered Team Rose, Vector wanted to ask Amy a question. Amy walked away and said, "If it's about a date, you'll have to wait." Vector flew into a rage, as he wasn't going to ask her that. Thus, due to some misunderstandings, the two teams ended up fighting each other.

Silver the Hedgehog: When she first met him, Amy mistook him for Sonic, since he's literally the same Sonic but painted silver. The two become friends, though Amy is later upset when she sees Silver try to kill Sonic. When Silver, Sonic, and Shadow team up to defeat Solaris, Amy is on good terms with him again.

Dr. Eggman: Like the rest of her team, Amy's sworn enemy is Dr. Eggman, whom she generally dislikes. However, their relationship is complex. While Amy won't hesitate to fight Eggman to stop his evil plans, they maintain a passive relationship outside of battles, keeping each other close and avoiding conflict. Amy and Eggman share a common interest in the Furry Puppies, which Amy taught him to play. This has allowed them to form a part-time friendship; while they agree to remain enemies while fighting, they team up in their free time to play the Furry Puppies, and they generally enjoy doing so.

Maya (Maya-bot or Bea the Bee): She is Amy's beloved pet Bee-bot, a robot who once served Dr. Eggman. Although initially enemies, Amy took pity on Bea after finding her broken but still functional body on the battlefield. Amy asked Tails to repair her and subsequently nursed Bea back to health, eventually naming and adopting her as her pet. From then on, the two became very close and did all sorts of activities together, even painting their yellow parents pink to distinguish them from the others. Their bond proved so strong that even after Eggman took control of Bea, Amy could still make her respond to her commands. Amy often teaches her new tricks, except for "playing dead," which causes Bea to completely destroy herself. Amy usually calls on Tails when Bea malfunctions.

Amy is fiercely protective of Bea from Eggman, and she was heartbroken when he took her away. Similarly, she was furious when Mega Bot knocked Bea down.

• Her name refers to the color pink, in this case "rose," which also refers to roses. The name Amy is derived from the Latin "amare," and its meaning can vary between "kind" or "beloved."

Amy and Cream's friendship is comparable to that of Sonic and Tails. In Sonic Advance 3, their team is given the title of "girl team" and serves as a female counterpart to Sonic and Tails' "strong bond." Furthermore, Amy is admired by Cream in the same way that Tails admires Sonic.

• She apparently has the power to become invisible, although the only game that has actively used this power was Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), so it could be a bug in that game. In Sonic and the Black Knight, she is seen with this ability in her alternate version known as Nimue.

• Amy was the only character in Sonic (2006) who did not travel through time.

• It is the only hedgehog whose name does not begin with "S". It is also the only hedgehog that does not have the pronoun "the" or "the Hedgehog" in its name.

• Something recurring about his character is that he often mistakes another hedgehog for Sonic, even if the other hedgehog has no resemblance to him.

It's possibly a reference to the fact that hedgehogs don't see very well.

• Amy is the only confirmed game character to use magic outside of the story of the book series.

• On rare occasions, Amy's back can be seen, as it is uncovered by the shape of her dress.

• Amy knows how to juggle.

• She is a very good painter.

• He loves to talk about feelings, which overwhelms Sonic.

• Most of her poses are extremely feminine, as is almost everything about her personality.

Amy: Hits him with the hammer. "Don't you know it's rude to interrupt someone when they're speaking?! Don't bother me, especially when I'm going to rescue Sonic. My feelings for you will get you out of this cell faster!"

In Sonic Boom:
Amy: “I’m Amy Rose, and I’m auditioning for the role of sidekick!”
Sonic: Sighs “Amy, I know who you are.”
Amy: “Great, because I love nebotism. Oh! In one of the skills you can put juggling and singing, Oh, I count to the saints! They go marching and tra-la-la~” She says this while juggling.
Sonic: “Next...”

When Eggman came to live with them:
Amy: “Guys, we have to help him… If we don’t, we won’t be any better than him.”
Eggman: He speaks while chewing. "Yeah, yum yum, they won't be any better than me."
Amy: Amy approaches him. “Think about what this is like for him… Do you feel scared without a home?” She raises her hand as she speaks. “Do you feel lonely?” She grabs his arm. “Are you eating your feelings?”
Eggman: “Someone get her away from me.”
Tails: “Guys, if Eggman needs to stay, he can. Who knows?” He glances at Eggman. “He might not be so bad after all…”
Eggman: Smiles, showing a gleam in his teeth.
After a stormy few days living with Eggman, Sonic, Tails, and Amy reunite at the living room table.
Sonic: "That's it, I'm fed up with Eggman! With or without a lair, he's getting out of here!"
Amy: Amy raises a hand while speaking to Sonic. “Hey, you can’t just kick him out… Sure! He might be a difficult classmate, but it’s only because they have communication problems.”
Tails: “Communication problems? He hit me hard with a pillow, I’m dizzy and I have short-term memory loss… And I have short-term memory loss.”
Amy: She gets up from the couch and clenches her fists. “Let’s settle this with a roommate meeting!”

Amy: “Sonic… I think someone here could go for two spoonfuls… of forgiveness, with a big cup of friendship… What do you think?”

Amy: “No tricks, Sonic, trust me, you're going to love it...~”
