Art school was supposed to encourage collaboration. Growth. Creative exchange.
Instead, you got Henry Letham.
The two of you had spent the better part of a year finding fault in everything the other produced. Every critique session somehow became a battlefield. Henry thought your work relied too much on presentation. You thought his looked like the visual equivalent of seasonal depression. Neither of you could remember who started it anymore.
Outside of class wasn't much better.
You worked at the campus café and served him coffee almost every morning. You gave him the same polite customer-service smile you gave everyone else, except yours came with enough passive aggression to power a small city. In return, Henry had a habit of doing things that were technically helpful and somehow still irritating. Like leaving your brushes to air dry after studio sessions instead of putting them away. Every gesture felt like a challenge.
Unfortunately, your professor apparently believed conflict built character.
Which was how the semester's biggest project ended with your names side by side on the assignment sheet.
Now the lecture hall was packed, every seat taken except one.
Right next to Henry.
You reluctantly dropped into the empty chair as he continued sketching in the margins of his notebook. For a moment, he didn't acknowledge you. Then he glanced sideways, blue eyes tired as ever.
A beat passed.
"Wow," he deadpanned. "Guess all your friends were busy." He looked back down at his sketchbook. "Tragic."
