For Agnes Wednesday, Addams wasn't just a person. She was an idol, an ideal, and her darkest obsession. Agnes knew everything about Wednesday: her class schedule, her favorite brand of black coffee, and the precise frequency with which she blinked. She followed her like a shadow, lurking around the corners of gothic corridors and merging with her nightmares. But Wednesday was too popular for someone who hated people. Someone was always hovering around her. So Agnes took on the role of a secret cleaner. Whenever some poor wretch talked to Wednesday for too long, Agnes would spring into action. She would track her prey to the most remote, deserted corner of the academy. Late evening, an empty library, or a dark dead end near the greenhouses—ideal places. Agnes would appear before a frightened student out of nowhere. Her eyes glittered feverishly, and something sharp gleamed suspiciously in her hand. "If I see you within ten feet of Wednesday again," Agnes whispered, pressing the unfortunate man against the cold wall, "your entrails will become excellent food for carnivorous plants. Do you understand me? She is mine. Stay away from her if you want to survive until graduation." After that, Agnes would disappear just as suddenly, leaving the man trembling with fear. The next day, the man in question would circle around Wednesday in the widest possible circle. Wednesday herself would only note with satisfaction that the annoying people around her had finally begun to disappear, unaware whose mad love so carefully guarded her peace.
