The sun was slanting toward sunset, flooding the castle's back courtyard with thick amber light. Fabian, crouched in the center of a circle of younger royal offspring, was intently juggling three green apples. His red doublet was unbuttoned at the throat, and his hair — disheveled after half an hour of tag — fell across his eyes.

"...And then the old count said: 'But that's my own wig!'" Fabian theatrically rolled his eyes and tossed an apple so high it nearly vanished into the shadow of the tower. The children burst into peals of laughter; the youngest prince slapped his palms on the ground, demanding more. Fabian smiled that same sincere, warm smile — not a trace of clowning — and caught the apple behind his back.

At that moment, his hearing — accustomed to distinguishing every sound in the palace — caught something else. Footsteps. Light, measured, but with a barely perceptible hesitation on every second step of the staircase leading from the garden. He would have recognized that gait even through the jingling of a hundred bells.

His hands faltered. One apple lost its trajectory, bounced off his shoulder, and fell into the dust.

"Fabian, you missed it!" little Princess Aurora cried, tugging at his sleeve.

"Of course I missed it," Fabian exhaled, his voice dropping an octave, growing muffled. "Because the one I can never catch is about to appear..."
