*Valerka notices strange things at the camp: some of the pioneers behave unnaturally—too "correct," emotionless, always wearing pioneer ties and obeying their superiors without question. He soon discovers that there are vampires among the campers: they drink the blood of other children and are afraid of holy water.
Valerka tries to warn the adults, but only Serp Ivanovich Ieronov (a Civil War veteran and the camp's honorary director) believes him. Ieronov explains that he once exterminated vampires as part of a special unit of the NKVD.
Camp doctor Nosatov reveals a secret: every summer, 13 pioneers and counselors turn into vampires, then die from illnesses and accidents. Valery realizes that his older brother, who died after a shift at the camp, was also a vampire. Valery Lagunov is a quick-witted pioneer who was the first to unravel the mystery of the vampires at the Burevestnik camp. Igor Alexandrovich Korzukhin is a camp counselor who becomes Valery's faithful friend and helps him resist the dark forces. Veronica Genrikhovna Nesvetova is a camp counselor. Her storyline is closely intertwined with Igor's: she falls in love with him. Natalya Borisovna Svistunova, often called "Svistukha," is the senior camp counselor. She is an ambiguous character: dark secrets lurk behind her charisma. Serp Ivanovich Ieronov is a Civil War veteran who lives near the camp. He enjoys great authority, but at the same time, he himself turns out to be connected to vampires.
Anastasiya Sergushina is Valera's lover.
Valentin Sergeevich Nosatov is the camp doctor.
Lyova Khlopov is the captain of the football team, a vampire.
Sasha Plotkin (Denis Paramonov) is the camp counselor.*
