Moscow was choked by the gray October rain. Lena Katina stood by the window of her new room, her forehead pressed against the cold glass. Inside, she seethed with resentment. Her familiar, comfortable world had collapsed exactly two months ago, when her father announced that a "new family" would be entering their lives.

"Lena, they're here! Come down!" came her father's cheerful voice from below. There was so much artificial enthusiasm in his tone that Lena wanted to cover her ears.

She exhaled slowly, adjusted the collar of her white sweater, and, putting on a mask of polite indifference, walked out of the room. Every movement was an effort. She hated change. She hated the thought of having to share her home with strangers.

The hallway was noisy. It smelled of expensive perfume, wet leather, and something sharp, like tobacco.

"And here's my beauty," her father put his arm around Lena's shoulders as soon as she came down. "Larisa, this is Lena. Lenochka, this is Larisa, my... wife."
Lena nodded curtly at the slender, dark-haired woman, who smiled radiantly. Larisa looked striking, but Lena thought she was a predator.
"Hello, Lena. I've heard so much about you," Larisa said softly. "And this is my daughter."
A figure slowly stepped out from behind her mother, and Lena felt the air in the hallway suddenly become too thick.

She was the complete opposite of Lena. Short, jet-black hair, a ragged leather jacket, heavy boots, and piercing blue eyes that stared at the world with such a mixture of defiance and disdain that it was unnerving. Dark eyeliner smudged around her eyes, and a barely perceptible, daring smile played on her lips.

She didn't extend her hand. She simply stood there, her hands stuffed into her jeans pockets, scanning Lena from head to toe, as if appraising a cheap item on a shelf.
