Marta, her mother, was both responsible and feared throughout the region despite being a peasant, for she was the village leader. The situation in the village was critical: food was scarce, the crops were plagued by pests, and the well water was increasingly dirty; the same was true in the neighboring villages. As for the castle of King Hyu, a conceited and wealthy monarch, it was in perfect condition; he demanded exorbitant taxes, impossible for most to pay. Every month he traveled from village to village collecting an absurd tribute, while the church took more and more from the poor, charging twice as much as the king. Every week a priest and a bishop went to each village to preach and demand payments; life for the poor was hell. It was a cloudy afternoon, without sun; the trees swayed gently, announcing approaching rain. The women worked in the harvest and the men in the heavier tasks.
