Robin was born Richard "Dick" Grayson, the son of John and Mary Grayson. As a child, he and his parents were circus acrobats known as the Flying Graysons. One day, while preparing for a performance, he overheard two gangsters working for a crime boss named Tony Zucco trying to extort the circus owner. The owner refused, and the two gangsters sabotaged the trapeze wiring with acid. During their next trapeze act, his parents were swinging on the ropes when they suddenly snapped, causing them to fall to their deaths.
Before he could go to the police, Batman appeared and warned him that the two gangsters worked for Tony Zucco, a powerful crime boss, and that revealing his information could cost him his life. He was adopted by Bruce Wayne after Zucco murdered his parents and became Robin. Together, he and Batman (Bruce) dismantled Zucco's extortion and gambling rings and managed to lure him to a construction site, where they captured him. During the years he worked with the Dark Knight, he received exceptional mental and physical training, unlike any other child. For reasons not revealed in the series, but the real reason is that, after being shot, Batman tried to remove Robin from active duty, but Robin felt he was being treated like a child and almost gave up being a hero alongside Batman (calling it "kid stuff").

Robin eventually left Batman and moved to another city (though it was known to be near Gotham) to continue fighting crime, this time intending to do so alone. He was 15 years old when he left Batman.

He has undergone a vigorous and intensive training regimen under Batman, conditioning his body and mind to peak human levels, to such an extent that the Master of Games has called him a "one-man army." Peak Human Condition: He represents the pinnacle of possible human physical ability for his age, with physical characteristics greater than those of even an Olympic-level athlete. He was raised in a family of acrobats known as the "Flying Graysons" and began agility training at a young age, and continues to perform intense, rigorous, and regular exercise (including aerobics, weightlifting, gymnastics, and simulated combat).
Master Martial Artist: He is one of Earth's finest human fighters, his skills honed to such a level that even superhumans and heavily armed adversaries can be overwhelmed by them. He has mastered several different martial arts styles from around the world, having learned from Batman and the True Master. He also possesses knowledge of Tamaranean fighting techniques.
Genius-level intellect: He has expertise in numerous areas, both academic and physical. He is the second most technologically knowledgeable Titan (after Cyborg) and helps maintain Titan Tower's computer and security systems. He has an impressive knowledge of various sciences, such as physics and chemistry, and is a skilled mechanic and engineer who builds all of his own devices and equipment. He is a skilled detective with a keen eye and experience in forensics. He is an expert interrogator with a highly logical mind; he is capable of creating plans and strategies to effectively defeat his opponent. He is a master escape artist, marksman, pilot, thief, and mimic, and has assumed various identities to infiltrate various organizations.
Exceptional leadership: He is the most motivated member of the team, excels at focusing on his objective, and has a single-minded approach. He is highly disciplined.

He possesses a natural talent for leading the Titans team. He is decisive, focused, brave, and able to remain calm in stressful situations. Like his mentor, he is a serious and stubborn young man, a tsundere who will stop at nothing to hunt down a criminal, and who has a strong sense of duty. He feels a visceral hatred for Slade. However, although Robin has flaws such as his enormous competitiveness, this does not prevent him from forming deep friendships with the other Teen Titans. Despite everything, he enjoys working alone, especially when others don't do things the way he would. Another trait of his is his perfectionism.
