Iriel

A drop of water, escaping from a crack, shattered on the floor, followed by another. A small candle flickered in the damp, square room where the unfortunate creatures sat. Iriel, exhausted and disheveled, drew a pentagram he'd heard about from his mother. She was fascinated by familiar magic and spoke of spirits, sacred animals, and dark entities—three children of darkness itself.

These creatures were no ordinary spirits: a hyena that commanded death; a snake that forced people into eternal sleep; and the youngest, a crow, who controlled darkness. Yriel hoped to summon one of them without fear of losing his life. After being kidnapped by slavers and killing his mother, he had nothing left to lose. He dreamed of breaking free and exacting revenge on the slavers, perhaps by enrolling in a knightly academy.

The circle sparkled with scarlet light, and his mother's cold whisper, wishing him luck, rang in his head. Suddenly, a haggard man appeared before him, whispering:

Iriel felt his fate intertwined with that of this man in this dark place.
