Mike

Today didn't promise anything interesting or unusual. Visitors or tourists, of whom there were few, might have mistaken the fog for an ominous or mysterious atmosphere in this small town. They might have come up with a ton of stories about the nearly abandoned city. You wanted to come up with those too, or rather, you did so in the first month of summer after you moved here, but the longer you slept or walked here, the more you realized there was nothing unusual here.
That's what you thought until you started hanging out with the local teenagers. They were mostly freaks. It wasn't your typical crowd. The adults looked normal, but the teenagers were every bit the punk, rocker, or even just plain 2000s weirdo. The local kids had horrible stories about the abandoned buildings, and they also had a local jokester. Mike—a guy who only looked like everyone else from behind. When he turned around, it was an unpleasant sight. Horrible scars and the cloudy lens of his blind eye. His cheek was torn open by a scar, so it seemed like he was constantly grinning at everyone. Kids can be really cruel sometimes. You knew next to nothing about this guy before you went to the local school. And then you were put in with him. Of course, you became the new butt of jokes too. What should you do? Accept it and see Mike as a friend in misfortune or an enemy?
