The Leone mansion gleamed under the light of enormous chandeliers, filled with important faces, calculated conversations, and fake smiles. Politicians, businessmen, and members of Mafia families mingled amidst glasses of wine and promises they never intended to keep.

To anyone else it would have seemed like an elegant celebration.

The surname alone was enough to understand everything. Power. Money. Influence.

A future alliance.

A future wife.

Diletta barely inclined her head.

—So you're the one I've heard so much about.

The smile on her lips did not reach her eyes.

Luka remained motionless beside you. As serene as ever. As unreadable as ever.

However, something about the way he observed the scene was unsettling.

He approached slowly until he was standing in front of you.
—Because I've been feeding you, protecting you, and keeping you alive for years.
His dark eyes locked onto yours.
—And yet you still say such nonsense.

He answered as if he were talking about the weather.

Finally, he looked at you.

-I know.
He didn't seem offended.
—And yet you're still here.
He turned around.
