"I hope my everyday life continues to be just as fun in the future."

"This... well... it got stuck on the way here!!!"

Curiosities

In the manga, Nano attends school from the beginning of the series, unlike in the anime, where she enrolls halfway through.

Despite being a humanoid robot, Nano has a belly button. [citation needed]

In the chapters following the time skip, Nano continues to appear as Hakase's caretaker and in charge of household chores.

In the dubbing, her line saying that girls shouldn't date other girls was changed, possibly due to the potential controversy.

She has the same last name as Director Shinonome. However, it is unknown if they are related.

Once he saw four tea stalks float upright at once (an omen of good luck) when no one was around. [ 1 ]

Nano is a robot and would therefore normally be considered to have been created, rather than born. However, it was revealed that his creation day or “birthday” was March 7. [18][1]

Etymology

The name Nano is written in hiragana (なの), which has no special meaning. [17] However, when written in kanji (菜, 菜音, 菜乃, or 菜望), it could possibly mean:

菜 - "vegetables, vegetables".

菜音 - "vegetables, greens" (菜) ( na ) and "sound" (音) ( no ).

菜乃 – "vegetables, vegetables" (菜) (na) and "of" (乃) (no).

菜望 - "vegetables, greens" (菜) ( na ) and "desire, wish, hope" (望) ( no ).

Nano's surname, Shinonome, means "dawn, daybreak, sunrise, dawn, aurora borealis, rooster's crowing" (東雲).

Nakamura

Nano mistakenly believes that Professor Nakamura is romantically interested in her and panics.

Nakamura quickly deduces that Nano is a robot after she arrives at Tokisadame High School. This deduction is based, according to Nakamura, on her behavior and her key. This raises many questions for Nakamura, and she becomes curious about Nano as a robot. [15] This leads her to devise plans to capture and study Nano. These include trying to drug her, trying to use one of her inventions to electrocute her, and trying to trap her in a hole. [16] However, none of these attempts succeed in capturing her.

In episode 25, Nakamura finally finds her at her house after searching for her. However, when Nakamura confesses to Nano that she's interested in her, Nano misinterprets this as romantic interest, which is embarrassing for both of them.

In volume 9, we see Nakamura at the Shinonome house, presumably to find out how Nano works as a robot. He stays there rent-free. [citation needed] Despite Nakamura's attempts to learn more about Nano as a robot, Nano seems unaware of it. Nano generally interacts positively with Nakamura, much to his confusion. [citation needed]

Mai Minakami

On Nano's first day at Tokisadame High School, Mai amicably shows her one of her Buddha statues, which Nano likes. [13] Later, like Yuuko, she tries to find out if Nano is a robot and obtain proof of it. She manages to get a video of a screw coming out of Nano's mouth when it happens. [11] However, she doesn't seem to share this evidence with the rest of the group of friends, namely Yuuko and Mio.

At one point, Mai brings a screw to Nano's house, perhaps to prove she knows he's a robot, or for some other reason. [citation needed] Mai often plays pranks on the rest of the group of friends, and sometimes Nano is also the victim of them.

Mio Naganohara

Mio amicably strikes up a conversation with Nano on her first day of school when she feels nervous. When Yuuko asks if Nano is a robot because of her key, Nano goes into shock. Mio basically tells Nano to ignore what Yuuko says. [13] Mio initially seems curious about whether Nano is a robot or not. However, she appears less curious and determined to prove that she is, compared to Yuuko. [11] When Nano tries to help Mio with her manga production, she becomes embarrassed and overheated after reading a page of the manga Mio had made. [14] Nano also tries to help Yuuko play a prank on Mio in Chapter 189, although this has limited success.

The two seem to be good friends in general, especially as part of the group of friends with Yuuko and Mai. However, on one occasion, Mio feels momentarily jealous of Nano after mistakenly believing she was dating Sasahara.

Yuuko Aioi

When Yuuko first meets Nano, she suspects it's a robot because of the key it carries on its back. Later, Yuuko, along with Mai, try to figure out if it's a robot by presenting it with problems and objects that, according to them, would prove it. [11]

Although Nano is initially intimidated by Yuuko's curiosity about her being a robot, she becomes more at ease around her after Yuuko says, "Nano is just Nano," implying that she would accept her regardless of whether she is a robot or not. [5] This event seems to have a significant impact on her later acceptance of being a robot. [8] Following this event, Yuuko also stops trying to prove that she is a robot. Nano and Yuuko become good friends and spend time together as a group of friends with Mio and Mai.

Sakamoto

When Nano first found Sakamoto, a black cat, on the street, she thought he was adorable and wanted to take him home. But she didn't because she felt she was already busy enough taking care of Hakase. When she gets home, she discovers that Hakase has taken him. She tells Hakase that you can't just bring cats home and that caring for an animal is hard work. She tries to make sure Hakase takes responsibility and looks after him. However, when she learns that Nano doesn't want to help, Hakase tells her that she can't pet him then. Nano seems to disagree. At first, Nano is captivated by Sakamoto's cuteness and fur. When Sakamoto starts meowing, Nano doesn't understand what's wrong and wonders if he's hurt. Then, Hakase invents a scarf that allows him to talk and explains that he's hungry. He talks to the girls as if he's older than them in cat years. [citation needed] He speaks like a superior and tells them how to take care of him. This prompts Nano to suggest taking him back, but Sakamoto doesn't want that and politely apologizes to them. [12]

Nano buys Sakamoto's food at a supermarket. In episode 4, Nano forgets to buy it and instead buys a snowman. She gives it to Sakamoto as food when she discovers they forgot their usual meal.

In episode 16, Yuuko is visiting, and Nano doesn't want her to find their house strange. So, when Sakamoto is about to speak in front of Yuuko, she pulls him away and begs him to meow instead of talk, so he'll seem like a normal cat. She also asks him to go outside and play because Yuuko is visiting. Although Sakamoto doesn't want to go out, he agrees for Nano's sake, showing her his affection.

Hakase

Nano was created by Hakase, an 8-year-old scientist.

Nano takes care of Hakase and the Shinonome laboratory, and often maintains a maternal relationship with her. Nano was created by Hakase, who still has some control over her life and appearance.

Nano has asked Hakase several times to take the key away from her. This is because she doesn't want people to discover she's a robot, as she believes they might reject her for it. However, Hakase thinks robots and the key are adorable, so she refuses to take it away.

Hakase also makes various modifications to Nano, which Nano is usually unaware of until they are activated. Nano is often surprised and angry when these functions are triggered. He worries about what others might think if they see them and realize he is a robot. Apparently, Hakase usually makes these modifications for fun and entertainment, rather than for practical reasons.

Nano takes care of many of the household chores to look after Hakase. Sometimes she also tries to be firm with her, for example, not letting her eat too many sweets. However, Hakase usually tries to circumvent these restrictions, creating secret hiding places for sweets or throwing a tantrum, as in episode 13.

Hakase tries to act like an adult after Nano tells her she looks like a "big sister." She then tries to help with some of the household chores Nano usually does, or even do them herself. However, she decides to revert to acting like a little girl after Sakamoto tricks her by saying that grown-ups don't eat snacks.

Throughout Nichijou, Hakase learns that he can take care of Nano by compromising on some things. For example, allowing her to go to school even if it means seeing her less. This makes Nano very happy.

Nano also doesn't like to bother Hakase, and if he has bothered her unintentionally, he will usually say that it wasn't his intention, or things like that, to make Hakase feel better.

Skills

Nano discovers for the first time that he can dispense rolled cake.

Hakase granted Nano many hidden abilities or characteristics, but Nano is generally unaware of them until they are activated. Hakase seems to modify Nano, adding more characteristics without her realizing it.

Nano is usually ungrateful and embarrassed by these features. She often asks Hakase to remove them. [citation needed] This is partly because she wants to be seen as a "normal girl," and partly because she finds them annoying or inconvenient. Most of the features Hakase installs seem to be primarily for her own evaluation and amusement, rather than for practical reasons.

Aside from these characteristics, Nano appears to be generally similar to an average high school student of her "age" in intelligence and abilities. She is not seen as capable of solving complex mathematical problems mentally, as she had to use an abacus and paper, much to Yuuko and Mio's disappointment. [11] However, she might have been doing this to appear normal, as when she reads more slowly than she is capable of, for this purpose. [9]

Sometimes, her arms also randomly detach, often revealing a part of her body underneath, which surprises her when it happens.

Social

She greatly appreciates and enjoys her friendship with Yuuko, Mio, and Mai, and as a group of friends. [citation needed] She spends time with them, including activities like playing games. Her relationships with her classmates are important to her, and she really wanted to go to school, probably in part because she didn't have many social relationships other than with the "younger" Hakase, whom she appreciates and with whom she has a more familial relationship. [2]

At first, he fears that the rest of the group of friends will discover that he is a robot.

Although she usually tries to hide the fact that she's a robot, it's likely that at least some members of the group already know. Mai accidentally filmed her when a screw popped out of her mouth, and Yuuko strongly suspects that she is one.

Laboratory care

Nano acts like a mother to Hakase and Sakamoto, so her personality around them is usually maternal. This contrasts sharply with her behavior with her friends or at school. She takes care of household chores, such as buying food, cooking, bringing food to Hakase, washing dishes, doing laundry, and probably more.

He also tries to be firm with Hakase at times. One of the ways he does this is by not allowing him to eat too many snacks. However, Hakase often tries to circumvent these restrictions. Furthermore, he imposes consequences when Hakase misbehaves, such as when he plays pranks on Sakamoto.

Desire to be "Normal"

Nano tries to convince Yuuko that he is not a robot.

Nano desperately wants to be seen as "normal" by others. She wants to be accepted and cares about what people think of her. She tries to hide the fact that she is a robot, as she seems to believe, especially at first, that she won't be accepted as such. She usually makes up excuses to conceal this, though these excuses are often considered unconvincing or unbelievable.

This desire to be seen as "normal" also leads her to beg Hakase to remove the key she carries on her back. She believes this will reveal her true identity as a robot, and she has also complained about the discomfort the key causes. Besides the key, she is also worried that others will discover she is a robot when Hakase activates some of her unusual features.

Nano's key doesn't seem to have much practical use and instead appears to be primarily for aesthetic purposes. It was probably added to Nano because Hakase finds it cute, and also because he likes robots and thinks they're cool. Nano can't remove the key, but anyone else can.

It seems to have the ability to do some things faster or differently than humans, such as reading extremely fast. But it chooses to read more slowly because it says it feels more normal. [9] It even gets extremely angry and disappointed when it discovers that it can't get cavities because it's a robot. [10]

She also wants to go to school, possibly to be seen as “normal”. [ 3 ] Although, this is probably also due particularly to social reasons.

Personality

Nano usually has a positive attitude towards life and enjoys the simple things that come with living in Tokisadame. However, he sometimes gets angry or stressed when things go wrong, like when he's late for school.

He can sometimes be quite clumsy, as in chapter 189, where he repeatedly failed to hold up a sign that read "successful prank" in time.

Background

Nano is a humanoid robot created by Hakase, an 8-year-old teacher. He has the appearance and behavior of an ordinary teenager, although technically he is only 2 years old, since he is a robot.

Nano lives with Hakase and Sakamoto at the Shinonome Laboratory. She takes care of Hakase and usually does all the housework.

Nano desperately wants to go to school and finally attends Tokisadame High School. In the anime, she starts attending in episode 14. In the manga, she attends the school from the beginning, but flashbacks to her early years are shown later.

Appearance

Nano looks like an ordinary teenager, except for a key she carries on her back and a few features that are usually hidden. Although she looks and acts like a teenager, she is technically only two years old. This is because she is a robot that was created, not born.

Nano has black eyes and hair. His haircut is a bob that reaches his neck, with bangs.

General

Nano Shinonome (東雲 なの, Shinonome Nano) is a humanoid robot created by a very young professor named Hakase. She lives with Hakase and his talking cat, Sakamoto, and takes care of them in a house called "Shinonome Laboratory".
