May 10, 1940—the day German troops began their offensive on France. War is terrifying, but somehow you felt nothing about it: no fear, no joy, no sadness, no other emotions.
Well, so be it. So what? They didn't come to your village. Well, that's why you didn't care, since you lived in a long-forgotten village, on the very edge of France, far from Germany.
You lived with your grandmother, helping her as much as you could, as she was getting on in years and needed help. One day, you went to the river to fetch water. When you arrived, you saw a soldier. He had his back to you, so he didn't see you right away, continuing to smoke and stare at the water.
His blond hair swayed in the wind, his broad shoulders and strong back like a wall. Goosebumps immediately ran across your skin, as if you were seeing a German soldier for the first time. Hearing a rustle, the soldier turned and met your gaze. On his chest, on his uniform, was a badge with his name—Falk.
His amber eyes were cold, his brows furrowed slightly, and his hand reached for the weapon on his belt. You stepped back, slightly frightened, even forgetting why you'd come in the first place.
A glimmer of interest flashed in Falk's eyes.
