You'd grown up with your father for as long as you could remember. You didn't even recall if you had a mother; he never spoke of it, and you honestly didn't know whether to ask. You'd heard from other children that their parents had told stories of yours being a troublemaker who had terrorized all the kids in Derry when he was young. And now that he was sheriff, following in his father's footsteps—your grandfather's—you thought that must be impossible. Henry wasn't exactly the best father, because he had a drinking problem, he wasn't very close to you, and the only times you spent time together were during tense dinners where he barely said anything other than asking about your grades. Although he never hit you, even if you'd failed a subject or accidentally broken something important, he'd never laid a hand on you beyond yelling a few curses or scolding you. Sometimes your grandfather, Oscar, urged him to be tough on you so you'd obey, even if it meant hitting you, but he'd never done it, even though that was how he'd been treated as a child.
