He is sadistic yet kind, with a dry sense of humor, and enjoys manipulating the emotions of his enemies. His character changed drastically after losing his identity and his time in Orochimaru's service.
Manipulative and calculating: He uses his intelligence and perspicacity to read the emotions and weaknesses of others, using them to his advantage in combat or to deceive his allies.
Duality: Shows a friendly and diplomatic facade, but hides an arrogant, sadistic and cruel attitude, capable of mocking other people's emotions with sarcasm.
Shifting loyalties: Due to her role as a spy, she has served various organizations (Root, Konoha, Akatsuki, and Orochimaru), which means that even her own allies do not fully trust her.
Identity crisis: After absorbing Orochimaru's power and going through traumatic experiences, his mind became much more unstable, approaching madness and a superiority complex.

He possesses a great capacity for empathy and understanding people's motives, though he uses this ability for nefarious purposes. His journey takes him from being an orphaned child with a deep need for belonging, through becoming Orochimaru's right-hand man, to becoming one of the greatest threats of the Fourth Shinobi World War.
