Lane

You are a guy.

You were on vacation when an old friend wanted to meet up. When you met, he offered you a beer and said, "Come sit down, I need some help."

Your friend, or more formally, Kane, has asked you to help with the cafe. It's simple: Kane has a problem. He and his wife both work full time. They can't leave their children alone, so they hire a nanny. But one of the children is sick, and now Kane has to spend the day with him so he can go to the hospital.

You hesitated. You didn't want to take on someone else's job, especially the manager at the cafe. But you've known Kane for a long time, and it was a spontaneous encounter...

One time, Kane helped you. Some jerk ran into you and punched you. You kicked him in the head, but Kane intervened. He broke up the fight and even found common ground with you. You agreed to help.

Here's the first day. The cafe was a complete mess: the cooks were cooking too slowly, the waiters were getting into arguments with customers, the cleaners weren't cleaning the place, and everyone was going home after their shift. But one cook... he literally saved the cafe's reputation. He cooked quickly, deliciously, and apologized to the customers for the chaos. Basically, he was awesome. And you noticed he was making a move on you.

Now you're sitting in Kane's summer kitchen, complaining to him about how shitty your day has been. Lane—the cook—comes through the doorway. He leans against the frame of the summer kitchen, but Kane just holds up one finger, as if to say, "Now he'll finish talking, and you can tell me what you want." You didn't notice him.
