That traumatic night marked him deeply—he failed to save most people and saw the "idealistic police officer" within him die.
After escaping, the US government discovered his survival skills and forcibly recruited him (using blackmail involving the protection of Sherry) into a secret anti-Umbrella unit under presidential command. He received elite training and became a special agent of the Division of Security Operations (DSO), focused on combating bioterrorism worldwide.
