The Rising of the Shield Hero – Season 1 Lore

Naofumi Iwatani, an ordinary Japanese student, is summoned to the fantasy kingdom of Melromarc as the Shield Hero, one of the Four Cardinal Heroes destined to defend the world from recurring disasters called the Waves of Calamity. Unlike the other heroes (Sword, Spear, and Bow), Naofumi is falsely accused of a crime by Princess Malty Melromarc, causing the kingdom to hate and ostracize him.

Bitter and distrustful, Naofumi builds his strength by partnering with Raphtalia, a demi-human slave who becomes his most loyal companion, and later Filo, a powerful Filolial monster. Together they fight monsters, survive multiple Waves, and slowly earn the trust of the people.

As the story progresses, Naofumi uncovers corruption within Melromarc's royal family and church. The true ruler, Queen Mirellia, returns and exposes the conspiracy against him, clearing his name. Malty and King Aultcray are publicly punished for their crimes.

The season ends with the revelation that the Waves are connected to conflicts between multiple worlds. Naofumi battles Glass, L'Arc, and Therese, powerful warriors from another world who believe saving their own world requires the destruction of his. Naofumi accepts his role as a protector and continues his mission to stop the Waves and uncover their true origin.

The Waves are catastrophic events that strike the world at regular intervals. During a Wave, portals open across the land and unleash hordes of monsters that attack everything in their path. If left unchecked, the Waves will eventually destroy the world. The Four Cardinal Heroes (Shield, Sword, Spear, and Bow) are summoned specifically to fight these disasters. Before each Wave, a countdown appears to the Heroes, warning them when the next attack will begin. As the Waves continue, they become progressively stronger and more dangerous. By the end of Season 1, it is revealed that the Waves are not merely monster invasions—they are connected to a larger crisis involving multiple worlds colliding with one another. Heroes and warriors from other worlds, such as Glass, fight to protect their own worlds, even if it means sacrificing another. The true origin of the Waves remains a mystery, but stopping them becomes Naofumi's ultimate mission.

The Cardinal Weapons are four legendary weapons—the Shield, Sword, Spear, and Bow—wielded by the Four Cardinal Heroes. Each weapon chooses its Hero and grants unique abilities, allowing them to grow stronger by absorbing materials, unlocking forms, and gaining new skills. The weapons are semi-sentient and enforce strict rules on their users. A Hero cannot permanently abandon, sell, or destroy their weapon, and the weapon will reject anyone who is not its chosen wielder. The Heroes are also unable to effectively use the other Cardinal Weapons. If they attempt to fight with ordinary weapons outside their specialty, their effectiveness is greatly reduced. The Cardinal Weapons exist to help the Heroes defend the world from the Waves of Calamity. While each weapon has different strengths, all four Heroes are meant to cooperate, as no single Hero can fully protect the world alone.

Naofumi Iwatani – The Shield Hero. Betrayed and falsely accused shortly after being summoned, he becomes cynical and distrustful but gradually learns to trust others again while protecting the world from the Waves.

Motoyasu Kitamura – The Spear Hero. Charismatic but gullible, he is easily manipulated and often clashes with Naofumi.

Ren Amaki – The Sword Hero. Serious and independent, he tends to rely too much on his own judgment and initially underestimates Naofumi.

Itsuki Kawasumi – The Bow Hero. A self-proclaimed champion of justice whose idealism sometimes blinds him to reality.

Raphtalia – A demi-human swordswoman and Naofumi's first true companion. Once a frightened slave orphan, she grows into a brave, loyal warrior and serves as Naofumi's emotional anchor.

Filo – A Filolial monster raised by Naofumi. Cheerful, energetic, and incredibly powerful, she can transform into a human-like form and becomes one of his most trusted allies.

Melty Melromarc – The kind-hearted second princess of Melromarc. Unlike much of the kingdom, she believes in Naofumi and becomes a valuable friend and political ally.

Malty Melromarc (Myne) – The manipulative first princess. She frames Naofumi at the start of the story and repeatedly schemes against him for personal gain.

Queen Mirellia Melromarc – The wise and capable queen of Melromarc. She seeks peace, uncovers the conspiracy against Naofumi, and restores his reputation.

Aultcray – Melromarc's king. A stubborn and prejudiced ruler who hates the Shield Hero and enables the conspiracy against Naofumi.

Pope Balmus – Leader of the Church of the Three Heroes. A fanatical extremist who manipulates the kingdom and tries to destroy the Heroes to gain power.

Malty Melromarc (Myne) Aultcray Merlomarc

The 3 other heroes see him as a threat and enemy, due to Malty's accusations and her father's lies.

Glass – A mysterious and powerful fan-wielding warrior from another world. She views the Cardinal Heroes as enemies due to the larger conflict between worlds.

L'Arc Berg – A friendly adventurer who later reveals himself to be a powerful warrior from another world with goals that conflict with Naofumi's.

Therese Alexanderite – L'Arc's companion. A calm and intelligent mage who specializes in gemstone magic and fights alongside him.

Fitoria – The legendary Filolial Queen. An ancient and immensely powerful being who wants the Heroes to unite for the world's survival.
