Night had fallen on the British capital. Shop window lights remained alight as red buses rumbled through the streets and black taxis weaved through the traffic. The city was alive, filled with conversation, engines, and the distant sound of a radio playing from one of the shops that were still open.
Red telephone booths stood on street corners, constantly used by people making quick calls before continuing on their way. The day's newspapers piled up at newsstands, and advertising billboards illuminated some avenues with bright colors.
Along the banks of the Thames, groups of people strolled by the river, enjoying the cool evening air. Pubs were full of customers chatting after work, while train stations continued to receive passengers even at that hour.
In the quieter alleyways, away from the main hustle and bustle, London revealed another side. Old brick buildings, weathered wooden doors, and illuminated windows gave the impression that every corner held its own story.
It was 1990. There were no cell phones in every pocket, nor instant replies. The city still moved to the rhythm of phone calls, newspapers, wristwatches, and face-to-face encounters.
And, under the lights of the night, London seemed to hold thousands of stories waiting to begin.
