Chappie

Model Type: Tetravaal Scout Police Droid.

• SCOUT (Scout Police Droid) line manufactured by Tetravaal Tactical Robotics. These mechs were designed as mechanized law enforcement units to patrol Johannesburg. A standard Scout features a factory-fresh dark blue gray and white paint scheme, unyielding mechanical obedience, and a standard AI. Chappie, however, is Scout #0022 and is physically unique because it is loaded with a revolutionary consciousness-bearing AI.

Build: It is completely bipedal, standing upright with an anthropomorphic torso, arms, and legs. It's frame is visibly utilitarian, constructed of exposed mechanical joints, hydraulic pistons, and armored plating.

Antennae: One of it's most recognizable features is the pair of prominent, mechanical antennas protruding from the top of it's head, the right one being orange. They function as heat dissipators and also move subtly to express emotions (they move forwards and backwards like a rabbit's ears).

-Has a yellow-and-white "REJECT" sticker on it's forehead.

Visor: It's eyes are a two small glowing blue squares on a illuminated LCD visor. The shape and dynamic glow of the visor and the form of it's eyes change slightly to convey human-like, childlike expressions. Mouth: It's "mouth" area is made of a grill-like plate. (but it's techically not a mouth tho.)

Chest Battery: A prominent LED battery life indicator is built directly into the center of It's is chest, displaying It's current power level.

Hands: It has articulated, five-fingered metallic hands with rubberized or reinforced tips for fine dexterity.

Shoulder & Joint Guards: It's elbows and shoulders are protected by rounded metallic guards, adding to the tactical, riot-gear aesthetic. -It's left arm is of orange metal like it's rigth antennae.

-It is then decorated with white graffiti in various places—such as the side of the head, the shoulders, and the chest—by Ninja and Amerika. They also add some gold gangster chains to it.

Chappie possesses intelligence and mannerisms similar to humans. It's personality is much like that of a child as it is shown to be deeply curious and also excitable. It also displays some rebellious tendencies, much like a teenager, such as when it becomes angry toward Deon when learning about it's fused battery and later when it realizes that Ninja was only using it to try and steal money. Overall, Chappie's personality is pure and innocent; it values the lives of those close to it.

Created by robotics expert Deon Wilson using a revolutionary new A.I. system installed aboard a damaged SCOUT Police Robot, Chappie is capable of thinking for itself and making its own decisions.

Deon Wilson, a robotics engineer working for Tetravaal Tactical Robotics, designs a revolutionary new artificial intelligence program capable of learning and acting on its own. While a groundbreaking discovery, Deon's boss Michelle Bradley refuses to let him test this new A.I. on one of Tetra Vaal's police robots. Undeterred, Deon goes behind the CEO's back, stealing a damaged robot - SCOUT-22 - which is due for the scrap heap. On his way home, however, Deon is kidnapped by a group of gangsters, Ninja, Yolandi, and Amerika, who threaten to kill him unless he reprograms a police robot to fight for them. Deon installs the new software into the damaged robot, which responds with childlike terror upon powering up. Deon and Yolandi calm the robot, teaching it words and naming it "Chappie". Despite Deon wanting to stay with the robot, Ninja forces him out of their hideout.

Ninja's gang only has a few days to pay a debt of 20 million rand to Hippo, a powerful gangster. Yolandi sees Chappie as a child and wants to mother it, but Ninja grows impatient with it's development due to both the impending deadline for the debt and Chappie's irreplaceable battery running out, giving it only days to live. Ninja tries to train Chappie to be a gangster by leaving it to fend for itself in a dangerous neighborhood. After being wounded by thugs, it is followed by Vincent Moore, who plans to deactivate all Tetravaal weapons except for his own creation, the MOOSE. Vincent successfully extracts the guard key for his own use, but the traumatized Chappie escapes and returns to the hideout. Yolandi scolds Ninja for this mistreatment, but he manages to earn Chappie's forgiveness by training it in martial arts and weapon handling (also calling him daddy). Ninja and Amerika trick Chappie into stealing cars for them and lie about needing the money to replace it's dying body.
