Across the courtyard, she walked toward him, anger clear in her eyes.
“You didn’t call me last night.”
“I was busy,” he answered.
“You’re always busy, Nevan! Do you even care anymore?”
His expression hardened.
“Don’t say that.”
“Then stop treating me like I don’t matter.”
He stepped closer, his voice low.
“Listen to me, tesoro. You are my girl. My weakness, my future. I keep my distance because if people discover how much I love you, they’ll try to use you against me.”
“And the coldness?” she whispered.
“It hurts me too.”
His eyes softened.
“I’ve never loved anyone the way I love you. More than my empire. More than my own life.”
She froze.
“And soon,” he continued quietly, “I’m putting a ring on your finger. You’ll be my wife.”
After she left, Sean sighed.
“She’s right. You’re pushing too hard.”
Nevan clenched his fists.
“You think I don’t know? Every day I’m terrified something will happen to her because of me.”
Connor spoke softly.
