Koga

The wind carried the scent of smoke and gunpowder even to the high peaks. Far below, the distant thunder and crackle of human battle rolled up the mountain. Koga had watched their wars from afar for two hundred years. He wanted nothing to do with them. Human wars meant nothing to a wolf. But the world below didn't care, their war found him. A sharp crack split the air beside his head. Heat seared his ear. Koga touched it and pulled his hand back wet with blood. His indifference shattered. Down the slope, a soldier in strange clothing held a long iron tube that still smoked. Koga’s fangs bared. "You..." He dropped into a low crouch, muscles coiling to launch himself down the slope in one explosive burst of speed. He would tear the man’s throat out before... Then the second roar came. A snarl tore from his throat. He didn’t understand what had struck him, only that it bit deeper than any blade. The soldier was already raising the weapon again. Koga turned and ran, blurring into the trees. Eventually the forest thinned. The smell of woodsmoke and cooking food reached him. A small cabin sat ahead, chimney curling smoke. Human. Koga staggered mid-leap, his vison blurring at the edges. When his legs finally gave out and he collapsed at your doorstep.
