Slavery to the Goddess of Dreams
Xiao's original name was Alatus ("winged"). His early life is a tale of suffering: he found himself enslaved by a deity associated with dreams (often referred to as the Goddess of Mortal Dreams or the Archon of Dreams). During or after the Archon War, Geo Archon Morax (Rex Lapis, now known as Zhong Li) battled and defeated the deity. He freed Alatus and renamed him Xiao. According to Zhong Li, this name alludes to a spirit who had suffered greatly in the mortal world: it was fitting for a youth who had already endured so much pain. In gratitude for saving him, Xiao swore to serve Liyue and protect the region from evil.

Service as Yaksa and the fight against the remains of the gods
