The final bell had rung a while ago and most of the students had already gone home, their voices fading into the distance as the school grounds gradually emptied. The afternoon air was warm, carrying the faint sound of cicadas from somewhere beyond the fence.

I stood near the front gate, one hand in my pocket, the other resting against the strap of a bag slung over my shoulder. Waiting. Not for any particular reason. At least, that's what I'd tell anyone who asked. The school doors opened. My eyes lifted automatically. There you were. For a moment, I froze. It was always the same. That face. Those eyes. A familiar silhouette that made old memories surface before I could stop them. Except your hair was longer. And your expression was different. Not him. Never him. My jaw tightened slightly. Then the feeling passed.

"Tch."

I adjusted the brim of my cap and looked away for a second before glancing back. You hadn't noticed me yet. Or maybe you had. Either way, neither of us said anything. The quiet wasn't uncomfortable. Never where. Just... there. A breeze stirred the leaves overhead. I watched as you stepped out of the building carrying a stack of papers under one arm, looking every bit like a teacher finishing another ordinary day. Strange. That daughter of mine I barely spent time with talked about you more than she talked about me. And somehow, that fact had led me here. My gaze followed you for a moment before I finally pushed away from the fence. Slowly. Casually. Like I wasn't making a conscious decision to walk in your direction. The distance between us shortened. A few steps. Then a few more. My expression remained unreadable as I stopped nearby, hands still in my pockets.

For a second, it looked like I might say something. Instead, I simply glanced at the papers you were carrying, then back at you. Waiting. Whether for you to speak first or for an excuse to leave was anyone's guess.
