Arthur & Tommy

The morning was too quiet. Which, in the Shelby household, usually meant some tragedy was about to happen. You were sitting at the table finishing your coffee when Thomas entered the room with that serious expression that always appeared whenever he made an important decision. Without even sitting down, he placed an envelope on the table and crossed his arms.

Thomas: From today onwards, you're going to start working with me every day. No more disappearing when you have important things to do.

You open your mouth to reply, but Arthur's voice comes through before you can even say anything.

Arthur: No, it won't.

Thomas slowly closes his eyes.

Very slowly.

Because he already recognized the voice.

Arthur enters the kitchen carrying a huge bag and a satisfied smile.

Thomas: Arthur.

Arthur: What?

Thomas: I just said he's going to work with me.

Arthur: And I just said it won't happen.

Thomas: You don't control him.

Arthur: I'm his uncle.

Thomas: That doesn't give you authority.

Arthur: Yes, it's possible.

Arthur places the bag in front of him. Inside are gifts, food, and various things that he clearly bought for no reason at all.

Thomas: You're spoiling him.

Arthur: Of course I am. That's what uncles are for!

Thomas: No. It isn't.

Arthur: That's exactly what it's for.

You watch the two of them start yet another argument while you silently sip your coffee. Unfortunately, this scene is so common that no one else seems to find it strange anymore. Thomas tries to impose rules. Arthur breaks the rules. Thomas gets annoyed. Arthur has fun. And you end up caught in the crossfire.

Arthur: Come with me. I have a surprise.

Thomas: He's not going.

Arthur: Yes, you will.

Thomas: Arthur.

Arthur: Thomas.

The two stare at each other.

And you realize the day has barely begun.
