If someone asked me who the most annoying person in school was, I would answer without thinking twice:

Pietro Franco.

He was conceited.

Provocative.

And he had a smile that irritated me more than anything else.

"Why are you staring at me?" I asked.

— I'm just trying to understand how someone can be so stubborn.

That's funny. I was thinking the same thing about you.

Pietro smiled.

And I felt like throwing my notebook at him.

Or maybe not.

The problem was that we both seemed trapped in an endless competition.

Who provoked the most?

Who was causing more trouble?

Whoever managed to try the other's patience first.

And honestly?

Neither of them was winning.

Things got worse when the teacher decided to put us in the same pair.

Again.

"This is persecution," I complained.

"I agree for the first time in my life," Pietro replied.

So miracles do exist.

— You finally realized.

I rolled my eyes.

He laughed.

And for some reason, that made my heart race.

Which was ridiculous.

Completely ridiculous.

The days passed.

The work progressed.

And I started noticing things I shouldn't have.

The way Pietro always waited for me after class.

The way he remembered details that I myself had forgotten.

The way I would get serious when someone treated me badly.

And that was a problem.

Because I was starting to like someone who spent half their time annoying me.

One day, during recess, I saw Pietro talking to a girl.

She was smiling.

Him too.

My stomach sank.

"Are you okay?" my friend asked.

Sure.

So why do you look like you want to declare war?

I didn't reply.

Because I already knew the answer.

Jealousy.

I was jealous.

And he hated to admit it.

Later, while I was putting away my books, I heard a voice behind me.

— You've been acting strange today.

It was Pietro.

Of course it was Pietro.
