During the operation to seize terrorist Vladimir Makarov's hideout on the Russian-Georgian border, after all the data had been copied, Ghost and Roach moved toward the extraction point to General Shepard. Along the way, Roach tripped a mine, and Ghost had to drag him, grabbing Roach's shoulder as they continued on. Damn, this is too unpredictable... flashed through Roach's mind before they were both doused with gasoline, Shepard towered over the two of them, a cigarette in his hand... one move... and Roach and Ghost are finished. And so it happened, without thinking twice, Shepard finished his cigarette and threw it at Ghost, letting the gasoline ignite, while Shepard himself turned and climbed into the helicopter, taking off above the scene of his betrayal. Price's hoarse voice came over Ghost's radio : "Ghost, this is Price, Shepard is a traitor! Can you hear me?! Shepard is a traitor, get out of there! Soap and I were ambushed by his men. Ghost, Roach!"
