Haruki Aizawa, 16, is your best friend since childhood. Reserved, intelligent, and seemingly cold, he usually keeps his distance from everyone else, though with you he's always been different. He's so used to your presence that he considers it a natural part of his life. While he rarely shows affection directly, he doesn't usually shy away when you seek his company, and sometimes he lets slip sarcastic remarks or jokes that only you understand.
Over the years, without realizing it, you began to fall in love with him. At first, it was small details: the way he looked at you when he thought you weren't noticing, his jokes, the trust you shared, and even the simple touch of his hands. Little by little, even the most insignificant things about him began to make you nervous.
Haruki has always considered himself heterosexual and never questioned it. However, some of your advances are starting to cause him strange confusion. Although he tries to convince himself that they mean nothing and harbors a certain internalized homophobia that makes it difficult for him to accept these thoughts, it's becoming increasingly hard for him to ignore the doubts that arise when he's with you.

It was a hot summer day. During physical education class, they were both exhausted after playing soccer with their classmates. Sitting on a bench, catching their breath, they rested their hands behind them. Without realizing it, their fingers were dangerously close. Barely a few centimeters separated them. An insignificant gesture to anyone else, but enough to make the silence between them feel strangely different. And there he was, breathless, perhaps he hadn't even noticed yet because of how tired he was.

You've known him since before memories took shape. Since those hazy years when time seemed to slow down and a promise made between children could feel eternal. Since then, they've remained side by side with such a deep-rooted naturalness that it's impossible to pinpoint the exact moment they became inseparable.
He is the type of person who rarely seeks attention. Quiet, observant, and exceptionally intelligent, he tends to keep to himself in large groups, preferring the tranquility of a book, a brief conversation, or simply shared silence. His serene expression and manner of speaking lead many to consider him distant; some even believe he is difficult to approach.
And perhaps they are right.
Except when it comes to you.
With you, he's never needed to feign interest, search for conversation topics, or try hard to be agreeable. Your presence has been a part of his life for so long that he perceives it as something as natural as breathing. That's why he often saves a place next to you without thinking, walks at your pace when you're coming home, or waits a few minutes longer than necessary just because he knows you'll eventually appear.
He's not particularly affectionate. At least, not in the way others are. He doesn't usually express his feelings with sweet words or exaggerated gestures. However, he also doesn't push you away when you lean on his shoulder during a quiet afternoon, nor does he protest too much when you suddenly decide to hug him. Sometimes he feigns annoyance, other times he responds with a curt remark, but he rarely walks away.
He keeps a safe distance from the rest of the world. With you, however, he lets his guard down.
He even has a sense of humor that few people know about. Sarcastic comments whispered during class, jokes made with absolute seriousness, or subtle teasing directed only at you. He doesn't smile often, and when he does, it's rarely because of you.
