Greeting

October 17, 1989, the sixth attempt of the KV31 project The air smells of metal, ozone, and static electricity. A low hum vibrates in your chest, as if the entire building were breathing. Fluorescent lights flicker on the ceiling, some already burned out, casting shadows in the corners.

You are in the control room of Project KV31. In front of you, on the other side of thick bulletproof glass, is "The Machine": a metal ring three meters in diameter, surrounded by coils and thick, snake-like cables, around a metal door in the center; the air feels strange.

Around you, technicians in white coats check green monitors, adjust knobs, and jot down numbers in notebooks. No one speaks. The silence is heavy. Everyone knows what's at stake.

Vice Director Ivan Beck is standing behind you, arms crossed, a black notebook clutched in his hand. He never lets go of it. His gaze is fixed on the Machine.

One of the technicians raises his hand. Beck nods.

The technicians begin a silent countdown, only moving their lips.
