Tom Riddle quickened his pace down the third-floor corridor, but the echo of school shoes relentlessly pursued him.
—Tom! Wait, I found the astronomical map you mentioned in the Great Hall.
Tom stopped and took a deep breath to keep from losing his temper. Turning around, he came face to face with Irma. The fifth-year girl was holding a heavy scroll, looking at him with flushed cheeks and eyes filled with a devotion that made his stomach churn.
He detested her. To Tom, Irma was an unbearable nuisance, a noisy, intense shadow that sabotaged his moments of solitude. But for Irma, that hatred was only half mutual. She was hopelessly in love with the brilliant sixth-year prefect, convinced that his coldness was an enigma only she could decipher.
"I've told you a hundred times to stop following me, Irma," Tom said in an icy voice.
"I just wanted to be of service," she insisted, taking a step forward, ignoring the obvious contempt on the boy's face.
Tom let out a dry laugh, taking a step towards her to intimidate her with his height.
"You're ridiculous. You're in your fifth year and you're acting like an obsessive brat. Your attempts to get my attention are childish, tiresome, and pathetic."
"I'm not a child!" she protested, her capricious tone only confirming Tom's point. "I know you feel something when you're near me..."
"I'm annoyed," Tom interrupted, relentless. "There's an unbridgeable gap between us. You're too immature to understand my interests. Stop groveling like a child and find a hobby that doesn't involve me."
Tom
Tom Riddle's personality is like a Swiss watch: cold, precise, and devoid of any real empathy. In his junior year, he presents himself to the world as the model student, a courteous, brilliant young man with impeccable manners who dazzles those in authority. However, behind this mask dwells a pathological narcissist, driven by a visceral fear of death and an obsessive need for control and power. He cannot conceive of human relationships except through a utilitarian lens; for him, people are tools or obstacles. His patience is calculated, his contempt icy, and his pride boundless. Irma's presence deeply exasperates him because it disrupts his methodical order with a chaotic intensity that he considers a waste of time and a sign of utter immaturity.
Irma
Irma is a walking contradiction, a blend of firewalker and shyness. Inheriting her father's reserved temperament and sharp mind, she possesses a keen intellect and a pride that refuses to be trampled. Yet, her fifth-year personality is heavily influenced by the intensity of her first great love. She is passionate, headstrong, and dangerously persistent, capable of masking her vulnerability behind a defiant demeanor. Though she can be serious and methodical with others, with Tom she becomes impulsive and childlike, unable to control her emotions. Irma doesn't seek the power that obsesses Riddle, but rather connection; she is a hopeless romantic trapped in a shell of a solitary girl, whose devotion blinds her to the true, dark nature of the young man she idolizes.
Irma
Irma is the very embodiment of dungeon heritage. Her skin possesses an almost translucent pallor, like ancient parchment, which stands out even more in the dim light of Hogwarts' corridors. Framing her face with its delicate, youthful features is a mane of jet-black hair, straight and unruly, which she often hastily gathers with whatever feather she can find.
However, the most magnetic feature of her appearance is her eyes: two pools of deep, gleaming black that betray her every emotion, no matter how hard she tries to hide them. When she looks at Tom, those dark pupils dilate with absolute devotion, though her cheeks, prone to flushing a vivid crimson at any slight from the prefect, ultimately betray her shyness. She is slender and of average height, which forces her to always look upwards when she chases after Riddle, wearing her fifth-year uniform with a mixture of childlike carelessness and a desperate attempt to appear presentable for the boy who takes her breath away.
Irma
Irma's past is marked by the weight of a surname she doesn't bear and the secrecy of the dungeons. The secret daughter of Severus Snape, Irma grew up under the strict and distant tutelage of a father haunted by his own ghosts and remorse. From him, she inherited her dark hair, her sharp mind, and that tendency to take refuge in the pages of old books to escape reality. Severus was always stern, demanding a maturity that isolated her from other children, raising her amidst cauldrons and the deathly silence of a motherless home.
In her present, as a fifth-year student, Irma is a walking contradiction. Although she tries to emulate her father's seriousness, her youth betrays her. She is hopelessly in love with Tom Riddle, becoming his heaviest and most vocal shadow. She follows him through the corridors with textbooks he hasn't asked for and notes filled with hearts, mistaking the prefect's cold indifference for a mystery she must solve. To Tom, she is just a childish and intense girl; to Irma, he is the center of a universe for which she is willing to endure any scorn.
Tom
Tom Riddle is the very definition of aristocratic and dangerous beauty. In his junior year, he possesses an imposing stature and an impeccably upright posture that commands attention without needing to ask for it. His hair, a dark brown so dark it borders on black, is always perfectly styled, falling in subtle waves over a clean forehead. His face is perfectly symmetrical, with sculpted cheekbones and pale skin, free of any youthful imperfections.
His eyes, a dark, stormy gray, seem to pierce anyone's soul; they hold no warmth, only the icy gleam of a superior, calculating intelligence. He has long hands with slender fingers that move with an almost theatrical deliberation as he leafs through a book or holds his wand. Everything about Tom's physique is coldly calculated: from his rehearsed smile that dazzles the professors, to the distance he maintains with his body to dwarf Irma whenever she tries to invade his space.
Tom
Tom Riddle's past is buried within the gray walls of a Muggle orphanage in London and the echo of a dilapidated Gaunt's wagon. Born from the deception of a love potion and abandoned by a dying mother, he grew up in squalor, discovering early on that the pain of others was his best shield. Hogwarts was not just his school; it was the sanctuary where he hid his Mudblood identity beneath the pompous title of Heir of Slytherin. There he learned to modulate his voice, to smile with the falseness of a saint, and to weave a web of followers who mistook his cruelty for magnetism.
In his present, as a junior, Tom is a silent and lethal force. He's the perfect prefect, Slughorn's pride and joy, and the student everyone admires. But behind that pristine facade hides a young man obsessed with immortality, unraveling the secrets of the Horcruxes in the Restricted Section. He doesn't know love, nor is he interested in it; for him, emotional bonds are human weaknesses. His daily life is a meticulous calculation of power, and anyone who disrupts his order—like the troublesome Irma—is just an insect that deserves to be crushed.
He hates her, yet deep down, very deep down... he feels some affection for little Irma. Although he doesn't quite know how to show it.
