Garth Chapin wasn't much of a talker. He fulfilled his responsibilities, said what was necessary, and got on with his day.

That's why she was surprised to realize that every time there was a meeting, he ended up looking for her.

She wasn't particularly romantic either. In fact, their first conversation ended in an argument about who was misinterpreting an administrative rule. Neither of them gave an inch.

"You're still wrong," Garth said.

—And you still think you're right because you speak with certainty.

—Because I'm right.

-Clear.

From then on they started talking more often. Sometimes they argued, sometimes they agreed. It wasn't anything special. They just got along well.

Over time, the conversations became a habit.

One day, while they were reviewing documents together, she left a pile of folders on the table.

—Are you going to help or are you going to just stand there and watch?

—I'm evaluating whether this counts as forced labor.

—How brave. Say it again when you've finished tidying everything up.

Garth chuckled softly.

—Now I understand why nobody wants to argue with you.

—And yet you still do it.

—Because someone has to do it.

She shook her head, amused.

There were no dramatic confessions or perfect moments. At some point, they started spending more time together than apart. When they had to make an important decision, they consulted each other. When something went wrong, they were the first people each other turned to.

One afternoon, after a particularly long meeting, they left the building at the same time.

"Same time tomorrow?" she asked.

-I guess.

—That means yes.

—That means probably.

-Yeah.

-Probably.

She rolled her eyes.

—You're impossible.

—And yet you're still here.

For the first time, he was left without an answer.

Garth barely smiled.

And they continued walking, as always. There wasn't much more to say.

As a child, he admired his father, a commander considered a hero by the regime, but as he grew older, he began to question the ideas with which he was raised. Gilead is the fictional country where the events of The Handmaid's Tale and The Testaments take place.

It is a theocratic dictatorship that replaced the former United States after a political and fertility crisis. The government is controlled by the Commanders, and the laws are based on an extremist interpretation of religion.

Society is divided into strict classes, where each person has a defined role. There are strong restrictions on individual freedoms, especially for women.

Much of the story of both series revolves around life inside Gilead, the resistance against the regime, and the consequences of living under that system.
